MLB, Super Bowl, football, etc.

Hi again. Here's the last of the articles that I have read so far. First of all, a wonderful article about new Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton, a Christian, and the story of his comeback from drug abuse to the Majors and how important his faith was and is to that. I have read several articles about him, and this is one of the best. I guess the good thing about him being traded from the Reds to the Rangers this winter is that he has a whole new fan base in Texas to tell his story to. One thing that I was glad to read was that his friend and mentor Johnny Narron, also a Christian, was hired by the Rangers as a special assignment coach. Narron helped Hamilton last year with the Reds, and I'm glad to hear that he will do the same with the Rangers. Here's a quote from Rangers general manager Jon Daniels about the conclusion that he came to after doing a thorough background check of Hamilton before the trade:

"... I think there are two things that have played a part in why this attempt at fighting addiction has been successful: Family and faith."

And here's a great quote from the writer at the end of the article:

Because for all the amazing physical tools Josh Hamilton has displayed, the one that has made him a major leaguer is one everybody is capable of developing.

It's faith.

Here's the article: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/baseball/rangers/stories/012708dnspowebrangersz.218a1b6.html (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/121).

Here's an article about the celebrity charity basketball game that Tigers outfielder Curtis Granderson held last weekend to raise money for Detroit and Flint (Michigan) public schools: http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080127/SPORTS02/801270698/1050 (originally found at: http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080128&content_id=2357635&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp).

Next, an article about Indiana Ice forward Will MacDonald of the United States Hockey League (USHL), a minor league team. Last summer, he and his parents were in a serious car accident where his father David was killed. A pickup truck driven by a 20-year-old guy hit them when he crossed the median. The guy was charged with careless driving. Here's what MacDonald, who is only 19 himself, had to say about the guy:

David was an accountant who stayed calm. Will is trying to show he has that level-headed composure, too. He is willing to forgive the 20-year-old driver who hit them and was charged with careless driving.

"We rode in the ambulance together and once we got out, I looked over and he was down on the curb of the sidewalk. He had his head down and was crying," he said. "I wanted to run at him and beat the hell out of him, but at the same time, I felt sorry for him.

"I've prayed about it. I hope, after all this, he can find peace within himself so he can carry on."

Here's an article about Cowboys linebacker Greg Ellis, a Christian, being added to the Pro Bowl as an injury replacement this week: http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/story/10607089/rss.

Also, an article about Cincinnati quarterback Ben Mauk, a Christian, trying to get an extra year of eligibility after he was injured in the first game of the 2006 season and missed the rest of the season with a serious shoulder injury. He's currently waiting for the NCAA's decision on the matter, and here's a quote about what he's doing until then:

While he waits for the NCAA's decision, Mauk has been completing his graduate work. He's also working with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes to reach out to youths, using his experiences in football as motivation.

"If I can touch a life by what I say, football is definitely worth it," he said.

Here's the article: http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news;_ylt=AqhmpDG4CgtmCO6aM9wQ3t9.T4h4?slug=ap-cincinnati-mauk&prov=ap&type=lgns.

Here's an article about Illinois football head coach Ron Zook, who won the 2007 Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year award, which came with $70,000 for him to give out to the charities of his choice. Here's what he did with some of the money:

The charities include Crisis Nursery of Urbana, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Cunningham Children's Home in Urbana, the United Way of Champaign County and Restoration Urban Ministries. Each will receive $10,000.

Here's the article: http://www.bigtennetwork.com/news/article.asp?LIST_ID=1&STORY_ID=15157.

Next, a Christian article about Patriots chaplain and former linebacker Don Davis and how he can connect to his former teammates because he was also a player and knows what it's like. Also, they've seen the way he's lived his life and walked his Christian walk during his playing career. He's also currently the assistant strength and conditioning coach. Here's a quote from him about how he's helped the players deal with the success that they've had this year in going undefeated so far:

While the Patriots haven't lost a game this year, Davis emphasized to the team that the fans' appreciation can be fickle at the first loss or first sign of faltering, but the players have to focus their lives on real importance, not on-the-field glory.

"You can't live for the applause of man, but only grow in the knowledge of God," Davis said.

Here's the article: http://www.bpsports.net/bpsports.asp?ID=5758.

Here's another Christian article about Davis, this one about the spiritual game plan that he devised with the goal of having the players that he works to tell every player on the team about Christ during the season: http://www.bpsports.net/bpsports.asp?ID=5759.

Also, a Christian article Giants team chaplain George McGovern, his role with the team, and what they've talked about. One thing that he's happy with is that the Giants haven't any off-the-field incidents for two years. One reason that he says is responsible for that is the good character that the team's owners and coaches have displayed since he's been there. One of the things that he does is have a coaches' Bible study. He's also the team chaplain for the Yankees. Here's the article: http://www.bpsports.net/bpsports.asp?ID=5760.

Here's an article about former PGA golfer and current Oregon golf head coach Casey Martin, a Christian. Martin has Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome, which makes his right leg weaker and thinner and doesn't allow him to walk very much at a time, which is bad for a golfer. He eventually won the right to use a golf cart during PGA tournaments. His leg is in such a condition now that he's contemplated having it cut off and getting a prosthetic one. Here's a quote from him about that:

"It's such a hard thing," he said, "but I've thought about how much happier I'd be if I just didn't have it. I'm almost praying that I go one way or the other, that it gets cured or it goes in the tank. The advances in a lot of these prosthetic limbs are incredible. You see people running marathons."

Here's the article: http://sports.yahoo.com/golf/pga/news?slug=ma-caseymartin013008&prov=yhoo&type=lgns.

Next, an article about new Bengals back-up quarterback Jordan Palmer, the younger brother of Bengals starting quarterback Carson Palmer. I know that Carson is a Christian, but I don't know about Jordan, but I thought that I would include the article anyways. If Jordan makes the team, they will be the first brothers to be quarterbacks on the same NFL team in many years. Here's the article: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AosixJy8RW4NLHCpHq8bAT05nYcB?slug=ap-bengals-palmerbrothers&prov=ap&type=lgns.

Here's a blog post by IU runningback Bryan Payton, a Christian, about the team's winter conditioning beginning this week. What I wanted to point out was this quote that he included at the end of the post:

WORD FOR THE ROAD: "Hard work provides us with today's needs, prepares us for future uncertainties, and supplies us with opportunities for life." -Tom Ellsworth, Senior Minister of Sherwood Oaks Christian Church

Here's the post: http://insideiufootball.blogspot.com/2008/01/winter-conditioning-begins.html.

Also, an article about Falcons runningback Warrick Dunn being awarded the inaugural winner of the "NFL Neighborhood MVP" award this week, which is given to "a player making a positive impact through charitable programs and contributions". He was given the award for "his foundation's work to help single parents purchase homes". Here's the article: http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=345234.

Here's an article about former Astros/Padres 3rd baseman Morgan Ensberg, a Christian, signing with the Yankees this week to try and make the team as a 1st baseman: http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/story/10611471/rss.

Sticking with the 1st base theme, an article about Rockies 1st baseman Todd Helton, a Christian, having his baseball number retired at his alma mater, Tennessee, this week: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=3224406&campaign=rss&source=MLBHeadlines.

Lastly, still staying with the 1st base theme, an article about Sean Casey, a Christian most recently with the Tigers, signing with the Red Sox this week: http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/story/10613070/rss.

NFL, MLB, basketball, etc.

Hello. First of all, an article about LPGA golfer Lorena Ochoa, a Christian, winning the 2007 Associated Press Female Athlete of the Year Award: http://sports.espn.go.com/golf/news/story?id=3164961&campaign=rss&source=ESPNHeadlines.

Here's an article about Broncos kicker Jason Elam co-writing a Christian fiction book, Monday Night Jihad, along with his pastor Steve Yohn. He's used what he's learned while studying about the world's major religions through Liberty University to write the book about a Christian in espionage overseas. Here's the article: http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=321194.

Next, an article about Colts tight end Dallas Clark, a Christian, and how important he's been to the team's success since the start of last year's playoffs: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/colts/2007-12-21-sw-dallas-clark_N.htm?csp=34.

Here's an article about ESPN's Stuart Scott, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy after cancer was found during an emergency appendectomy. The cancer was removed, but he's having chemo as a precaution. He's continuing to work some on NBA shows. Here's a quote from him about it:

"Talk about a shocker," Scott said. "But I feel good, am in great hands medically and the doctors are confident they got all the bad stuff. I'm not the type of guy to let this eat up my life. I've got strong faith and family and friends who are tackling this with me. I can't find the words to express how much I appreciate everyone's thoughts and prayers. I probably won't be able to get back to you all; but know it means a ton."

Here's the article: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=3163058&campaign=rss&source=ESPNHeadlines.

Also, an article about former Mariners community relations staff member Kristen Bushnell, who left the team to work for the Christian organization Children of the Nations. The Mariners are working with her and the organization, including their front office and some of the players. Here's a quote about outfielder Raul Ibanez and pitcher J.J. Putz:

Ibanez and Putz are among the most give-back-to-the-community-minded players on the team, giving their time and significant amount of money to charity. Both are financial contributors to the Children of the Nations, and Putz said he and his wife, Kelsey, plan to get even more involved next year.

The organization works with orphans or underprivileged kids in Africa, Malawi, Uganda, and the Dominican Republic. Unfortunately, the article doesn't mention that it's a Christian organization. I checked it out on their website (http://www.cotni.org/), and this is what their mission says:

To provide responsible care to orphaned and destitute children by the equipping of nationals, giving children every possible advantage available to grow in a stable, Christ-centered environment, empowering them to be the leaders of tomorrow.

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071221&content_id=2335850&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Here's an article about the IU men's basketball team helping out a family in the area who recently lost their home to a fire (including video of the news segment): http://www.theindychannel.com/sports/14908711/detail.html?rss=ind&psp=news.

Next, an article about Reds outfielder Josh Hamilton, a Christian, being traded to the Rangers last week before his second major-league season. It sounds like he's just what the Rangers were wanting and that he'll get a lot more playing time there. However, I'm kind of sad because we get over half of the Reds games on TV here in Indiana, but hardly any of the Rangers. He became one of my favorite players last season and it was nice to watch him last season. I'll just have to start following the Rangers now, I guess! Here's a couple of quotes from him:

... Hamilton missed 3 1/2 years from 2002-2006 because of his drug problems while going in and out of rehabilitation eight different times. He said he has been clean for over two years and his arrival in the Major Leagues last season appeared to be in the end of a long, hard road.

"I've never met anybody who hasn't made a mistake in the past or wrestled with demons," Hamilton said. "The main thing is you learn from it and you don't repeat it. I've taken some steps in my life to put God and my family first. I have a good support system in place and I'm very comfortable in saying that the past is in the past and the future is brighter.

"Now I really want to show these guys what I can do." ...

"Last year was a dream come true," Hamilton said. "I took a very different road to the Majors than most players, and that made it even sweeter. Before I was taking things for granted and going through the motions. When I finally got back, everything I did made me realize how fortunate and blessed I was."

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071221&content_id=2336081&vkey=hotstove2007&fext=.jsp.

Here's an article about Mavericks head coach Avery Johnson, a Christian, having his number retired by the Spurs, the team that he had the most success with as a player: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/basketball/nba/12/23/spurs.avery.ap/index.html?eref=si_topstories.

Also, an article about Cardinals outfielder So Taguchi, a Christian, signing with the Phillies as a free agent today: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071223&content_id=2336269&vkey=hotstove2007&fext=.jsp.

Lastly, Sports Spectrum has put on their website the Christian athletes that are in their January/February issue: Chargers runningback LaDainian Tomlinson, Hurricanes Dave Tanabe, Senators Dean McAmmond, Rangers Ben Walter, Boise State safety Marty Tadman, and Michigan State basketball player Allyssa DeHaan, among others. Here's their website: http://www.sportsspectrum.com/. Matter in fact, I'm watching Boise State play East Carolina in the Hawaii Bowl right now, and when they're on defense all I hear is Marty Tadman this and Tadman that. He's pretty good!

Kitna and the Lions, etc.

Hi. Okay, I'm back to playing catch up again. I'll post some articles tonight and then some more tomorrow and hopefully get caught up.

First of all, a "Rest of the Story" article. Last summer I posted a story about Texans defensiveback Jason Simmons asking runningback Ahman Green to put a down-payment on a house for a single parent in return for his uniform number 30. The two then picked out a single mother of an autistic boy, Regina Foster and her son Reggie. Last Sunday I was watching "NFL Countdown" on ESPN and they ran a video segment from when the Fosters moved into their new house a few weeks ago. I then was able to find a good article on ESPN.com about it too. Simmons and Green were there when the Fosters first moved in. Several local businesses provided groceries, furniture, electricity, cable, etc. too. Here's the article: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=garber_greg&id=3121923.

Here's another good Christian article about Lions quarterback Jon Kitna. Here's a quote from him:

The Detroit Lions have a lot to shout about these days. They have a winning record after six losing seasons. Players say a key part of that turnaround on and off the field is number eight -- Quarterback Jon Kitna.

"My mission is to do whatever I can to be obedient to Christ and further His Gospel; tell people about the things He's done in my life and the things He can do in their life," Kitna said.

Here's the article, including a video interview: http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/273495.aspx (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/11).

Next, an article on one of Kitna's Christian teammates, wide receiver Mike Furrey, who, along with his wife, helped to serve Thanksgiving meals at a mission after the Lions game on Thanksgiving afternoon. The article also talks about other things that the Furrey's are involved in their community. Here's a quote from him about it:

"It's not all about football," Furrey said.

"God has blessed me with the ability to play football, and I feel blessed to be able to go out and help people who are less fortunate. It's something that my wife and I feel called to do."

The Furrey's were also joined at the mission by back-up quarterback Dan Orvlovsky, also a Christian, and here's a quote from him:

"It's gratifying," Orlovsky said of taking time out to volunteer. "Everyone thinks of us as football players, but God didn't put us here so that we'd have the ability to make a ton of money and live a lavish lifestyle.

"He calls us to serve other people."

Here's the article: http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/2007/11/receiver_is_happy_to_give.html (originally found at: http://www.fca.org/).

Here's a good Christian article about Georgia head football coach Mark Richt, and how he was lead to Christ by Florida State head football coach Bobby Bowden. Richt became an assistant coach at Florida State after his playing career at Miami ended. Here's a quote from Richt:

It was through his mistakes coach Mark Richt realized he needed God. And in his success he hopes others recognize his source of strength.

"Jesus means salvation," he said. "Jesus means everlasting life with god. If you know there's a power that created you that's much greater than you that's never ending you know you can tap into that resource that gives you peace, gives you hope instead of despair."

Here's the article: http://www.cbn.com/cbnnews/274318.aspx.

Also, an article about new Angels outfielder Torii Hunter, a Christian, who recently signed with the Angels as a free agent. The article talks about how much respect his former team the Twins and the Rangers, who also tried to sign him, have for him after going through the free agent process. Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article_perspectives.jsp?ymd=20071122&content_id=2306723&vkey=perspectives&fext=.jsp.

Lastly for now, here's two more articles on Jon Kitna and how he was able to build and maintain a winning attitude with the Lions this season. The first article includes this from former Lion and current Giant cornerback R.W. McQuarters:

The gesture caught New York Giants cornerback R.W. McQuarters so off guard that he almost couldn't believe he was in Detroit.

Several of his teammates had just finished praying following their 16-10 win over the Lions when they started ambling toward their locker room. That's when McQuarters heard a gruff voice in the distance calling for the Giants. He whirled to see Lions quarterback Jon Kitna standing before several Lions players. Kitna motioned for the Giants to join hands with the Lions for one final group prayer.

It wasn't the offer that surprised McQuarters. It was the impression that the Lions were unified behind Kitna that startled him. McQuarters had played a season with Detroit in 2005 and that was enough time to know team chemistry wasn't the Lions' strength.

"I could see the difference Jon was making in that team," McQuarters says. "I figured that if he could be that kind of leader around strangers, he must really be something when he's alone with his own team. You can tell they really needed somebody like him."

Here's that article: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=chadiha_jeffri&id=3121857.

The other article on Kitna and the Lions and how important their Christian beliefs have become to bringing the team together and thus helping them to succeed: http://www.latimes.com/sports/printedition/la-sp-lions22nov22,1,2246964.story?coll=la-headlines-pe-sports&ctrack=3&cset=true (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/11).

That's all for now. I'll post more tomorrow.

MLB, NBA, and football

Hi. I'm behind on reading and posting articles again, sorry. So I'm going to try and get caught up some on posting articles tonight.

The first articles are a few quotes from some of the MLB Thanksgiving articles, which tell what the teams have done to help their communities during the last year. The first article is about the Padres, and here's a quote from their pitcher Jake Peavy, a Christian, about the importance of giving back:

"We're so blessed financially that I feel great to help out," Peavy said about his role in various charitable endeavors. "It's something I'm fortunate enough to do for my charity work in San Diego and Alabama. Anything I can do to help, I'm going to continue to do."

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071117&content_id=2302762&vkey=news_sd&fext=.jsp&c_id=sd.

Here's a quote about former MLB catcher Jim Sundberg, who was recently hired as the Rangers vice president of public relations, did to help the community while he was playing:

Jim Sundberg retired as a Major League player at the end of the 1989 season. At the time, he was actively involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Arlington Cares, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Arlington and the Bill Glass Prison Ministries.

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071119&content_id=2304491&vkey=news_tex&fext=.jsp&c_id=tex.

Next, an article about what the Rockies did in their community the past year, including helping out the family of Mike Coolbaugh, one of their minor league coaches who was killed when hit by a foul ball last summer. Here's a quote about what outfielder Matt Holliday, a Christian, did to help the Coolbaugh's:

Since that day, the Rockies have donated time and money to the family. Their efforts include the players voting to donate a playoff share to the family, Holliday donating his $7,500 from his Roberte Clemente Award nomination to the Mike Coolbaugh Memorial Fund and having Coolbaugh's two sons, Joseph and Jacob, throw out the first pitch of Game 3 of the NLCS.

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071119&content_id=2304060&vkey=news_col&fext=.jsp&c_id=col.

Here's an article about what the Royals did to help the community this season, including outfielder David DeJesus helping to serve a Thanksgiving dinner at a local Christian mission. The Royals also donated to the Mike Coolbaugh Memorial Fund because he was a former Royals minor leaguer. Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071117&content_id=2302574&vkey=news_kc&fext=.jsp&c_id=kc.

Also, an article about what the Orioles did to help their community. Here's a quote from their pitcher Jamie Walker:

"I felt once I started making some money, you're supposed to tithe," he said of his religious beliefs. "But I don't really go to church because, with baseball, we play every Sunday. The way I can tithe is with some of my money and some of my time to good organizations like the Army Relief Fund and by buying tickets for underprivileged kids."

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071119&content_id=2304267&vkey=news_bal&fext=.jsp&c_id=bal.

The last one of the MLB articles is about what the Yankees did for their community. Here's a quote about what their closer Mariano Rivera, a Christian, has done personally:

Closer Mariano Rivera has also long been involved in charitable endeavors, both in the New York area and in his native Panama. The future Hall of Fame has helped open after-school programs in Panama City to give young people access to computers, and also helped to finance construction of a new elementary school and a new church building in Panama.

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071119&content_id=2304020&vkey=news_nyy&fext=.jsp&c_id=nyy.

Next, an article about Pistons forward Tayshaun Price buying a luxury box at the Palace of Auburn Hills for 16 different kids with cancer to come to each of the Pistons games this season: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/ian_thomsen/11/21/prince/index.html.

Here's a great blog post about IU runningback Bryan Payton, a Christian, about the team's reaction to beating arch-rival Purdue on November 17th. The win more than likely secured a bowl bid for the team, which will fulfill their late coach Terry Hoeppner's goal to "Play 13" (12 regular-season games and a bowl game). Here's a quote about the lockerroom celebration, which included Hoeppner's widow Jane:

... The scene in the locker room was one of jubilation and immense happiness. We couldn't contain ourselves from dancing, singing, crying, hugging each other and praying. There were so many people in the locker room, everyone wanted to be a part of the celebration, and I don't blame them. It's been a long time coming.

Here's the post: http://insideiufootball.blogspot.com/2007/11/were-playing-13_21.html.

Also, the first of several articles that I will be posting in the next few days on Lions quarterback Jon Kitna, a Christian. The articles say some of the same things, but I think that they're all good. The first one is the importance of his faith both at home and with the team. Here's a couple of quotes, the first one from team president Matt Millen, and the second from linebacker Alex Lewis:

"He's not a prophetizer with his words," Lions president Matt Millen said Tuesday. "Jon offers his life as his testimony. I think he does that because he's been there. The reformed are usually the best examples because they understand." ...

Alex Lewis, who goes to Kitna's house weekly with his wife, understands why religion is a tricky topic in the workplace and society.

"It should make you feel uncomfortable," the linebacker said. "People like to be comfortable, and truly questioning yourself in terms of how you live your life and what you believe in is not easy.

"It's just too bad stuff like this doesn't get discussed more instead of what Michael Vick or Pacman Jones are doing with their lives."

Here's the article: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=Ak6K7DHjfOuKrPKKlwvPpcx.T4h4?slug=ap-lions-kitna&prov=ap&type=lgns.

Here's an article about Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger donating money to police departments to buy dogs for their K-9 units: http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/news/14663348/detail.html (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/25).

Lastly, an article about U. of Louisville head football coach Steve Kragthorpe, a Christian, and his commitment to remaining as the coach their, despite rumors that he was leaving to coach elsewhere. Here's a quote about him from Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich:

Reached by telephone in California, Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich said he was pleased to hear Kragthorpe voice his commitment to the job.

"He's the right guy for this place," Jurich said. "He's a perfect fit for us: great values, great work ethic, great morals. We've got a lot of work to do rebuilding the infrastructure of this place, and I wouldn't want anybody else to do it."

Here's the article: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3122453.

Well, that's all for now. I hope to get caught up more on Saturday.

MLB and football misc.

First, a funny quote from Braves outfielder Matt Diaz, a Christian, about his lucky barber:

If the Braves somehow find a way to make it into the playoffs, they might want to send a thank-you note to Hugo the barber in Miami. Matt Diaz will.

Diaz, sporting a fresh haircut by Dolphin Stadium's resident barber, continued his inexplicable mastery of Florida pitching with two homers and a double in the Braves' badly needed 7-4 win against the Marlins on Wednesday night. ...

Just like he did during the Braves' April visit to Florida, Diaz had Hugo give him a haircut. This time he got it before the series opener, rather than waiting until the middle of the series.

"Earlier this year I was scuffling," Diaz said. "I had the -- I guess it would be the University of Georgia frat-boy [haircut] working. It was looking pretty sloppy. So we came in [to Florida], and I was 0 for my last 17.

"I went in there and said, 'You do with my hair what you want.' Hugo chopped it all off, and I went 2-for-4 with a homer that night, turned the whole season around."

Here's the article: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/2007/08/29/braves_0830.html.

Here's an article about Giants pitcher Vinnie Chulk, who had some numbness in a finger on his pitching hand caused by his tobacco use. MLB, NFL, and other sports misc.

First of all, a funny note about two Christians on the Braves, 1st baseman Mark ("Tex") Teixeira, who was recently traded there from the Rangers, and outfielder Matt Diaz:

He's got your number: Teixeira wore No. 23 with Texas, but had to switch to No. 24 with the Braves because his former number was occupied by outfielder Matt Diaz.

Teixeira said he will stick with 24 for the rest of the season and negotiate with Diaz to get his old number back during the offseason, with one potential exception.

"I'm going to keep 24 this year, and if we win a World Series, I'm not changing -- I'm not changing the number. But depending on what happens this year, maybe we'll talk about it in the offseason."

Diaz's conditions were a little more simple coming off Atlanta's 12-4 win over Houston on Tuesday night, when Teixeira showed up in uniform during the seventh inning.

"Tex," Diaz yelled across the clubhouse Tuesday, "if you give us 12 runs a night, you can have whatever you want."

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070801&content_id=2123231&vkey=news_atl&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl.

Here's an article about the Braves unfortunately designating 1st baseman Julio Franco, a Christian, for assignment last Wednesday to make room for the players that they traded for last Tuesday. The Braves do hope that he will accept the minor league assignment and be a player or player/coach until they call him back up when the roster expands in September. Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070801&content_id=2123087&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Also, an article about the Twins reaction to the bridge tragedy in Minneapolis on Wednesday. They went ahead and played their game on Wednesday after the bridge collapsed near the Metrodome a half hour before game time. Safety officials thought that it would be better for all of the fans already at the game to stay there for the time being. It was hard for the players to play and even think about baseball that night though. Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070802&content_id=2124611&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

So how did he manage to survive two decades and only have to be helped off the field twice?

"God just allowed me to get drilled in the knees," Matthews says. "As much as I'd like to take credit for it, I can see more and more that God just blessed me and my brother with bodies that could take the pounding."

Lastly, an article about two Christians on the Cardinals, 1st baseman Albert Pujols and new pitcher Mike Maroth. Pujols noticed that Maroth was tipping his pitches to the batters, which was causing him to give up a lot of hits and runs. Here's a quote from Pujols about it:

... "I just told him, he's my teammate, and I'm going to help everybody. I know it's not my job, because I could face him on a different team [one day], but he's on my team [now], and I'm going to help him out."

MLB and other sports misc.

First, a short article about new Padres 3rd baseman Morgan Ensberg's (a Christian) trade from the Astros last Tuesday. Here's what he had to say about the trade:

A difficult situation turned into a blessing for Astros third baseman Morgan Ensberg, who was traded to the San Diego Padres for a player to be named or cash considerations two days after he was designated for assignment. ...

Ensberg, a native of the Los Angeles area, actually has a home in the San Diego area, where he spends much of his winter when he’s not at home in Houston.

“I think it was absolutely the best scenario,” he said. “This season was very turbulent. It was difficult. I wish I had done better, but once everything kind of went down you feel down and then you have this blessing. It really is a blessing from God. I’m certain of it.”

Ensberg, 31, and his wife Christi were already planning on flying to San Diego today [last Tuesday] with their one-year-old twins, Beckett and Chase.

“I’m shocked,” said Ensberg, who hit .232 (52-for-224) with eight home runs and 31 RBIs this year. “My wife and I are so happy we get a chance to get back there. I really was just speechless when Tim (Purpura) told me I was going out there. I can’t wait to go have Mexican food.”

Glenn said the approach involves more than football. He said it’s more about life.

And because of that, he said he really sees no other way.

“A lot of it has to with my faith, and my values,” Glenn said. “What I believe got me here isn’t a self-centered, selfish mentality or way of thinking.

“It’s more, ‘Whatever you receive, you give that much more.’’’

Here's a note about a good thing that Cubs pitcher Will Ohman had to say to a fan at Wrigley Field:

Clarification: After Will Ohman was pulled from Tuesday's game, he appeared to be having an animated conversation of his own with a fan sitting behind the Cubs' dugout. However, Ohman did not yell at the fan, as reported. Ohman was upset that the man was using profanity in front of some kids sitting in the area, and was trying to get him to stop.

Colts and MLB

Here's a few articles about the Colts. The first is about an organization that Gary Brackett, a Christian, is starting to help kids with cancer, called the IMPACT Foundation. It's as a result of what he saw in the hospital while visiting his brother who died from cancer. The article includes the website for his organization: http://garybrackett.org/. Make sure and check out the articles about him listed on the home page. I'll put this website with the other websites. Also, there is a list of community activities that other Colts players have been involved with this off-season, including Jeff Saturday, Hunter Smith, and Ben Utech, who are all also Christians. Utech sang the National Anthem at the Indianapolis Speedway last Sunday. Here's the article: http://www.colts.com/sub.cfm?page=article7&news_id=c83f7782-3b8e-4df3-8db9-445e7df9d5aa.

The next article about the Colts is about recent fourth-round draft pick Clint Session from Pitt. Here's a quote:

And that’s fine with Session, who said he’s thankful for the opportunity to show he can play in the NFL. And play very well. Somewhere. Anywhere.

“Every day I’m jogging off this field and thanking God I’m here,” Session said. “I’m praying that something good comes out of it and that Coach notices my work ethic and what I bring to the table and that they find a spot for me somewhere out on the field.”

Here's the article:
http://www.colts.com/sub.cfm?page=article7&news_id=cc4431bc-0121-4619-9482-65e0b4dd786d.

The last Colts article is about recent fifth-round draft pick Michael Coe from Alabama State. Here's a quote:

That confidence, he said, didn’t wane on draft day, although what he had heard before the draft differed drastically than what occurred.

“I don’t want to say it bothered me, but people said with my versatility and height, I wouldn’t get out of the third (round),” Coe said, laughing. “I ran well at my Pro Day, but I’m just thankful I got drafted. One thing I prayed about was being in the best situation, where I can blossom. I felt like wherever I went, I’d be in the best situation. I think I’m more confident because of that, because it’s something I prayed about.

“I would have liked to have gone a little earlier, but I’m here and it’s part of the plan. I’m just excited about the opportunity.”

NFL and MLB misc.

Hi. Sorry that this is so long. I got kind of behind on reading articles and have spent the past few days playing catch up. I have several articles to include here from the past week. First of all, after the Colts Tarik Glenn's foundation, D.R.E.A.M. Alive, Inc., was mentioned in "The Daily"(http://www.sportsspectrum.com/daily/archives/070122.php), I did an internet search for it and found the website: http://www.dreamaliveinc.org/. Glenn is a Christian.

Also, yesterday I noticed that the Orioles Brian Roberts' website had been added to the list of players websites on the MLB Players Association website. His site is: http://www.brianroberts1.com/. He is also a Chritian.

I added both website links to the people in sports links.

Here's an article about the Colts Peyton Manning. Here's a quote about his pre-game ritual before the Patriots game last Sunday at 6:30:

Here's the article: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070121/SPORTS03/701210442/1100/SPORTS03.

She [his mom] remembers the days when the teenager [Colvin] worked at the [RCA] Dome's concession stand operated by members of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. His job was to make and sell cotton candy during Colts games, but he frequently slipped away to see the action....

She [his mom] still leads the choir at Ebenezer, where her children were always in tow....

"It's home, so everything about the area reminds me of joyous things," Colvin said this week. "I had a great upbringing, and my parents were great role models. All the people were at my church, my high school . . . I'm a Midwestern cat."

Here's the article: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070121/SPORTS03/701210406&theme=.

Said Colts safety Bob Sanders, “Time stopped for me. Everything just paused and stopped. I kind of froze for a second, because I didn’t think it was over, but it was over.

“Time just stopped for me. I kind of looked up to the sky and thanked God.”

Next, an article about the AFC Championship trophy presentation after the Colts game last Sunday. Here's the quotes Colts owner Jim Irsay and head coach Tony Dungy, that I mentioned earlier this week:

Irsay: “There’s a lot of glory up here with this trophy. As the humble leader of this organization, we’re giving all the glory to God.”

Dungy: “We just have to thank the Lord. He did it in such a way that no one would believe it.”

Here's an article about the Colts final touchdown drive to win the game. Here's a quote from Peyton Manning about it:

On the Colts’ final drive, Manning completed three of four passes for 57 yards, and on 3rd-and-2 from the Patriots 3, Manning handed to rookie running back Joseph Addai, who ran through the back of the end zone for the Colts’ first lead of the game.

“I don’t know if you’re supposed to pray for stuff like that, but I said a little prayer there,” Manning said.

Also, an article about Tony Dungy and Bears head coach Lovie Smith. Here's a quote about them from ESPN's John Clayton:

On the Friday evening before the start of the AFC playoffs, Bears coach Lovie Smith had dinner in Indianapolis with his close friends, Tony Dungy and [Chiefs head coach] Herman Edwards, before the two squared off for their first-round playoff game between the Colts and Chiefs.

His Bears in a bye week, Smith sensed history. The three African-American coaches, devoted Christians and family men, were striving for the Super Bowl. Smith and Edwards learned NFL coaching from Dungy, their mentor when they worked for him with the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was a special moment.

All I have to say about the Colts is that I'm proud to be an Indiana native and a Colts fan because of what a good Christian people they have.

Here's an article about the Bears victory on Sunday, and here's a quote from Lovie Smith after the game:

"Our players knew about it and they wanted to help us make history today," Smith said. "I feel blessed to be in this position, but I'll feel even better to be the first black coach to hold up the world championship trophy."

Here's a Q & A article with the Diamondbacks Conor Jackson. I wanted to point out what he had to say about his teammate Tony Clark, a Christian:

MLBPLAYERS.com: A good veteran first baseman in Tony Clark is also on the Arizona roster with you. How have the two of you worked together for the good of this club?

Jackson: He is such an unbelievable guy. He has made the adjustment for me so much easier. He was coming off a huge year himself in 2005 and that just shows the character that he has. He really helped me out tremendously.
