MLB, football, and basketball

Hello. I've got some extra time because of the snow and ice outside, so I thought that I would go ahead and post mid-week instead of waiting till the end. The first article I have to post tonight is about former Astros pitcher Trever Miller, who signed as a free agent with the Rays last week. Miller played with the Astros the last two years, but had played for the Rays for the two years before that. Here's a quote from him about returning to play for the team near where he lives in Florida:

"It's been a blessing to be able to play big-league baseball at home,'' Miller said. "I didn't think it would happen again. ..."

Here's the article: http://blogs.tampabay.com/rays/2008/02/rays-add-trever.html (originally found at: http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080208&content_id=2368504&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp).

Here's a good article about Georgia football head coach Mark Richt and his son Jon, both Christians. On Signing Day last week Jon, a senior at Prince Avenue Christian School in Athens, GA, signed to play football with Clemson, whose head coach Tommy Bowden (also a Christian) is a good friend of Mark. Mark thought that there would be less pressure on him and Mark if he were to play for someone other than him. I thought that it was neat that Mark went to Jon signing day ceremony before going back to his office to check on his own recruits. Here's the article: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=schlabach_mark&id=3234394 (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/233).

Next, an article about a group of Orioles fans, the Oriole Advocates, who have a neat program called "Cardboard to Leather". The group collects new and used baseball equipment (bats, balls, gloves, uniforms, etc.) to donated to kids in impoverished countries, like in Latin America. These kids would normally have to make-do with whatever they could find for equipment, like making gloves out of cardboard and balls out of tape. Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080207&content_id=2367527&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp.

Here's an article on NC State women's basketball head coach Kay Yow, a Christian who is fighting breast cancer. This month is "Think Pink" campaign for breast cancer awareness with the women's NCAA teams, and several teams are wearing pink uniforms for one game to raise awareness. One of those teams was Yow's NC State team last week, whose uniforms all also had the name "YOW" on the back to honor her. Everyone at these games--players, coaches, fans, etc.--wear pink. Money is being raised for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, part of the Jimmy V Fund for cancer, named after the late former NC State men's basketball coach Jim Valvano who coached with Yow. He died from cancer several years ago. Here's the article: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncw/notebook?page=notebook/dish080207.

Also, an article about Cowboys linebacker Greg Ellis, a Christian, whose comeback this season from a torn Achilles tendon last season was punctuated by winning the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award and being named to the Pro Bowl: http://news.aol.com/story/_a/comeback-led-cowboys-lb-greg-ellis-all/n20080208170809990011?ecid=RSS0001.

Here's an article about Kansas guard Brandon Rush, who tore his knee last summer which caused him to come back to college for his senior year this year instead of going on to the NBA. Here's a couple of quotes from his head coach Bill Self and him about it:

"There's no doubt Brandon's injury has been a blessing for the program," Self said. "No doubt at all. But I wouldn't go so far as to say it's been a blessing for Brandon. If he'd never gotten hurt, he'd be in the NBA right now, and that's his ultimate dream. But if he continues to progress, his draft status will be improved, in my opinion." ...

"'Blessing in disguise' _that's what my mama said. This might be a blessing in disguise," Rush said. "My mom always knows what she's talking about, especially about basketball."

Here's the article: http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/02/08/sports/BKC-T25-Kansas-Rush.php (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/260).

Next, an article about Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez, who donated a custom car for a Boston children's hospital to auction off to raise money: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080209&content_id=2369324&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Here's an article about Bengals linebacker David Pollack, a Christian, who has a big decision coming up about whether or not he's going to attempt to comeback after a serious neck injury or not. Here's a couple of quotes from him about it:

“Even if I can’t play football again, I feel blessed that I’ve been able to play a kids’ game this long,” he said. “The experiences along the way have made me a better person, a stronger person. You learn a lot about life and who really cares about you when things like this happen.” ...

Deeply spiritual, he says he prays daily, not to play football again, but for direction and strength.

Here's the article: http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/ajc/sportscolumns/entries/2008/02/09/pollack_talks_a.html (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/7).

Also, an article about new Royals manager Trey Hillman, a Christian, and his style of managing: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080210&content_id=2369800&vkey=spt2008news&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Here's an article about former Diamondbacks 1st baseman Tony Clark, a Christian, signing as a free agent with his hometown Padres this week: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3240246.

Next, an article about another Christian MLB free agent Mike Sweeney signing to play with the A's this week after having spent his whole career with the Royals: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3240225.

Lastly, a quote from a Q & A article with IU center D.J. White:

Once you sign your first NBA contract, what's the first thing you're going to buy?

If I am blessed enough to sign a contract, that would be great, but right now I am focused on my senior season and leading my team to a championship.

MLB Christmas

Hi. I'm going to divide the articles that I have into two posts so that they won't be too long. This post has just MLB Christmas articles. Every Christmas each MLB team interviews one player, coach, broadcaster, or front office person for a Q & A article about the holidays. Following are quotes from the seven articles that stood out from a Christian perspective:

Blue Jays coach Brian Butterfield:

MLB.com: As the head of the house, are you required to still believe in Santa?

Butterfield: No. We've never really put too much emphasis on Santa. We put it more on our Lord and Savior. We have a strong faith, so the great thing of it all is the celebration of Jesus' birthday. That's big under our roof. We always remind people that he's the reason for the season.

Here's that article: http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071216&content_id=2327545&vkey=news_tor&fext=.jsp&c_id=tor.

Mariners broadcaster Dave Niehaus:

MLB.com: What's your favorite Christmas song?

Niehaus: It's always been "Silent Night." In fact, a couple of years ago, Marilyn and I went to Germany and went to this little town in Austria called Obendorf. I remember from my childhood that my mother told me the man who wrote "Silent Night, Holy Night" was from Obendorf. Anyway, we were on a bus tour and came into the town of Obendorf. There were houses painted with children's stories and all of a sudden it started snowing. I mean it was just beautiful. The snowflakes looked more like snowballs falling on this little village in the Bavaria Alps.

Here's the article: http://seattle.mariners.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071215&content_id=2327345&vkey=news_sea&fext=.jsp&c_id=sea.

Nationals pitcher Mike Bacsik:

MLB.com: Why will Christmas be special for you this year?

Bacsik: Our little girl, Mary Grace, who is almost 3 years old, has a pretty good idea about Christmas and Santa Claus. We are trying to teach her the religious part of it, too. She understands Santa Claus, which is neat for us. She will wake up Christmas morning and (realize that) Santa Claus came to our house.

Here's the article: http://washington.nationals.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071215&content_id=2327306&vkey=news_was&fext=.jsp&c_id=was.

Orioles manager Dave Trembley:

MLB.com: What are your favorite things about the holiday season?

Trembley: Family. Good food. Reflection. Church. Where I grew up, there was a lot of snow at Christmastime. But I don't miss that at all. I like sunshine and 75 degrees on the beach. That's what I like now.

Here's the aritcle: http://baltimore.orioles.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071215&content_id=2327287&vkey=news_bal&fext=.jsp&c_id=bal.

Padres pitcher Jake Peavy, a Christian:

MLB.com: You talk often about how important family is to you. How big a deal was Christmas growing up in the Peavy house?

Peavy: It was as big as it gets. I think down south, Christmas is much more than just the toys and stuff -- Christianity, the birth of Christ. I just think that a lot of that is bred into Christmas down south. It's a great holiday. There's lot of family involved, and now that we're doing it with my boys ... that makes it very special.

Here's the article: http://sandiego.padres.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071215&content_id=2327311&vkey=news_sd&fext=.jsp&c_id=sd.

Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd, a Christian:

MLB.com: Finally, what is Dan O'Dowd's Christmas wish?

O'Dowd: My Christmas wish is that everybody's dreams come true. I believe that dreams are really an essential part of life. I think they're God-given. I think they're created down deep within you. I hope everybody's dreams true, people that do believe.

And I pray for that for my kids every day. It's the greatest feeling in the world -- in this world, anyway.

Here's the article: http://colorado.rockies.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071219&content_id=2333482&vkey=news_col&fext=.jsp&c_id=col.

The last of the MLB Christmas articles, Tigers pitcher Jason Grilli, a Christian:

MLB.com: Having grown up in a baseball family, how important has Christmas been in your family, when you know everybody can be together?

Jason Grilli: It's definitely huge. Holidays for us are huge especially when you're away from them so much throughout the year. For us, the holidays that we play [during] can be tough. Any holiday, I think, especially during the baseball season, whether it's a birthday or a wedding, those are the occasions that sometimes you miss out on, unless it's someone in your immediate family. So Christmas and Thanksgiving are very huge in the sense that it's a point to celebrate the holiday for what it is. I celebrate Christmas and we celebrate the birth of Jesus and what his sacrifice means to us and we celebrate being together.

even more Tebow, Christmas, football, MLB, music, etc.

Hello. Here's my last post for now, because I'll be caught up with the articles that I have read so far. The first article is another article on Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, this one a Christian one. Here's a quote about the amazing story about how he almost was never even born:

His mother, Pam Tebow, in the profile [during the Heisman Trophy Show], said she declined the advice of a doctor to get an abortion after she became seriously ill and dehydrated when pregnant with Tim, her fifth child while living overseas. Bob Tebow said his son is a "miracle baby and so we have reminded him that hundreds of times."

Also in the article, Florida Atlantic quarterback Rusty Smith is a member of Tebow's church in Jacksonville too.

Here's the article: http://www.bpsports.net/bpsports.asp?ID=5723.

Here's an article about the work in the community done at Christmas by some of the pro teams in Washington D.C.: the Redskins, Capitals, and Wizards. Among those specifically mentioned in the article are Redskins wide reciever Antwaan Randle El (a Christian) and Wizards guard Gilbert Arenas. Here's the article: http://www.connectionnewspapers.com/article.asp?article=91647&paper=69&cat=115 (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/32).

Next, an article about Padres pitcher Jake Peavy, a Christian, signing a contract extension with the team last week: http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/story/10526625/rss.

Here's an article about Braves pitcher Tim Hudson hosting a shopping spree for Make-a-Wish kids at a local Toys "R" Us: http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071212&content_id=2324395&vkey=news_atl&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl.

Also, an article about some of the Bengals giving back to their community at Christmas, including cornerback Blue Adams, wide receiver Chad Johnson, and kicker Shayne Graham. Here's the article: http://news.cincypost.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/AE/20071212/SPT03/712120318/1022/.

Here's another Christian article about Tim Tebow, this one including a good video too: http://www.cbn.com/CBNnews/284384.aspx.

Next, the last article on Tebow, at least for now! Here's a quote of the letter that he got from President Bush congratulating him on winning the Heisman, which I thought was neat:

The letter was dated Dec. 9 and read:

"Dear Tim, Congratulations on winning the Heisman Trophy. More importantly, I appreciate your priorities as stated in your speech! Faith, family, academics and sport. If your mission was to allow the Almighty to shine brightly, it worked. I appreciate the love and pride that your parents obviously felt last night. Please give them my best. Sincerely, George Bush."

Here's the article: http://cbs.sportsline.com/collegefootball/story/10530101/rss.

Here's an article on the Cubs helping out one of their minor leaguers, Donnie Veal, a Christian, and his brother after the recent death of their father. Their mother had already died three years ago, and there were a lot of bills left after the deaths. Here's the article: http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071214&content_id=2326152&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc.

Also, an article about former Maryland quarterback Sam Hollenbach, a Christian, being signed to the Redskins practice squad last week. At least he has a foot in the door, and as recent articles that I've posted have shown, you never know what can happen from there! Here's the article: http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=318622.

Here's an article about Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday, a Christian, having his high school number retired this weekend in Oklahoma. Here's a quote from him about making it to the Majors:

"In high school, I never dreamed I would have the chance to play in the major leagues or play in the World Series. With the Lord's blessings and hard work, I've been able to do that. I always thought I had the talent, but I've learned that you have to keep working at things every day. With hard work, you can achieve your dreams."

MLB, NBA, and football

Hi. I'm behind on reading and posting articles again, sorry. So I'm going to try and get caught up some on posting articles tonight.

The first articles are a few quotes from some of the MLB Thanksgiving articles, which tell what the teams have done to help their communities during the last year. The first article is about the Padres, and here's a quote from their pitcher Jake Peavy, a Christian, about the importance of giving back:

"We're so blessed financially that I feel great to help out," Peavy said about his role in various charitable endeavors. "It's something I'm fortunate enough to do for my charity work in San Diego and Alabama. Anything I can do to help, I'm going to continue to do."

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071117&content_id=2302762&vkey=news_sd&fext=.jsp&c_id=sd.

Here's a quote about former MLB catcher Jim Sundberg, who was recently hired as the Rangers vice president of public relations, did to help the community while he was playing:

Jim Sundberg retired as a Major League player at the end of the 1989 season. At the time, he was actively involved in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Arlington Cares, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Arlington and the Bill Glass Prison Ministries.

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071119&content_id=2304491&vkey=news_tex&fext=.jsp&c_id=tex.

Next, an article about what the Rockies did in their community the past year, including helping out the family of Mike Coolbaugh, one of their minor league coaches who was killed when hit by a foul ball last summer. Here's a quote about what outfielder Matt Holliday, a Christian, did to help the Coolbaugh's:

Since that day, the Rockies have donated time and money to the family. Their efforts include the players voting to donate a playoff share to the family, Holliday donating his $7,500 from his Roberte Clemente Award nomination to the Mike Coolbaugh Memorial Fund and having Coolbaugh's two sons, Joseph and Jacob, throw out the first pitch of Game 3 of the NLCS.

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071119&content_id=2304060&vkey=news_col&fext=.jsp&c_id=col.

Here's an article about what the Royals did to help the community this season, including outfielder David DeJesus helping to serve a Thanksgiving dinner at a local Christian mission. The Royals also donated to the Mike Coolbaugh Memorial Fund because he was a former Royals minor leaguer. Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071117&content_id=2302574&vkey=news_kc&fext=.jsp&c_id=kc.

Also, an article about what the Orioles did to help their community. Here's a quote from their pitcher Jamie Walker:

"I felt once I started making some money, you're supposed to tithe," he said of his religious beliefs. "But I don't really go to church because, with baseball, we play every Sunday. The way I can tithe is with some of my money and some of my time to good organizations like the Army Relief Fund and by buying tickets for underprivileged kids."

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071119&content_id=2304267&vkey=news_bal&fext=.jsp&c_id=bal.

The last one of the MLB articles is about what the Yankees did for their community. Here's a quote about what their closer Mariano Rivera, a Christian, has done personally:

Closer Mariano Rivera has also long been involved in charitable endeavors, both in the New York area and in his native Panama. The future Hall of Fame has helped open after-school programs in Panama City to give young people access to computers, and also helped to finance construction of a new elementary school and a new church building in Panama.

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071119&content_id=2304020&vkey=news_nyy&fext=.jsp&c_id=nyy.

Next, an article about Pistons forward Tayshaun Price buying a luxury box at the Palace of Auburn Hills for 16 different kids with cancer to come to each of the Pistons games this season: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/writers/ian_thomsen/11/21/prince/index.html.

Here's a great blog post about IU runningback Bryan Payton, a Christian, about the team's reaction to beating arch-rival Purdue on November 17th. The win more than likely secured a bowl bid for the team, which will fulfill their late coach Terry Hoeppner's goal to "Play 13" (12 regular-season games and a bowl game). Here's a quote about the lockerroom celebration, which included Hoeppner's widow Jane:

... The scene in the locker room was one of jubilation and immense happiness. We couldn't contain ourselves from dancing, singing, crying, hugging each other and praying. There were so many people in the locker room, everyone wanted to be a part of the celebration, and I don't blame them. It's been a long time coming.

Here's the post: http://insideiufootball.blogspot.com/2007/11/were-playing-13_21.html.

Also, the first of several articles that I will be posting in the next few days on Lions quarterback Jon Kitna, a Christian. The articles say some of the same things, but I think that they're all good. The first one is the importance of his faith both at home and with the team. Here's a couple of quotes, the first one from team president Matt Millen, and the second from linebacker Alex Lewis:

"He's not a prophetizer with his words," Lions president Matt Millen said Tuesday. "Jon offers his life as his testimony. I think he does that because he's been there. The reformed are usually the best examples because they understand." ...

Alex Lewis, who goes to Kitna's house weekly with his wife, understands why religion is a tricky topic in the workplace and society.

"It should make you feel uncomfortable," the linebacker said. "People like to be comfortable, and truly questioning yourself in terms of how you live your life and what you believe in is not easy.

"It's just too bad stuff like this doesn't get discussed more instead of what Michael Vick or Pacman Jones are doing with their lives."

Here's the article: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=Ak6K7DHjfOuKrPKKlwvPpcx.T4h4?slug=ap-lions-kitna&prov=ap&type=lgns.

Here's an article about Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger donating money to police departments to buy dogs for their K-9 units: http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/news/14663348/detail.html (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/25).

Lastly, an article about U. of Louisville head football coach Steve Kragthorpe, a Christian, and his commitment to remaining as the coach their, despite rumors that he was leaving to coach elsewhere. Here's a quote about him from Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich:

Reached by telephone in California, Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich said he was pleased to hear Kragthorpe voice his commitment to the job.

"He's the right guy for this place," Jurich said. "He's a perfect fit for us: great values, great work ethic, great morals. We've got a lot of work to do rebuilding the infrastructure of this place, and I wouldn't want anybody else to do it."

Here's the article: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=3122453.

Well, that's all for now. I hope to get caught up more on Saturday.

MLB, football, etc.

Hi, I'm back. Happy Thanksgiving again. I'm going to stay up late tonight anyways, so I thought that I might as well add the rest of the articles that I have now.

The first article is another one about Padres pitcher Jake Peavy, a Christian, who won the NL Cy Young Award last week. The article is about the scout who encouraged the Padres to draft him eight years ago, and how good that move looks now: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071118&content_id=2303262&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Here's a blog post from Colts head coach Tony Dungy, a Christian, about their game last Sunday against the Chiefs and their upcoming game tomorrow night (Thanksgiving) against the Falcons. Here's a good quote from him about Thanksgiving:

I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving and we're going to do our best to make it an enjoyable evening for you. We also hope you remember what this Thursday is really all about--being thankful to God for all the good things He has done for us throughout the year. And most of us do have a lot to be thankful for in 2007.

In other words, the most important thing about Thanksgiving isn't football, contrary to popular belief. Here's the post: http://www.mycolts.net/tonydungy/blogentry/a41ede17-56df-4a81-9444-6c1f750b36ea.

Also, an article about Red Sox DH David Ortiz helping to collect non-perishable items at a Boston-area supermarket to send to his native Dominican Republic to help after the devastating tropical storm Noel hit there recently. He was there at the supermarket on his birthday, November 18th. Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071118&content_id=2303309&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Here's a Christian article about Purdue women's soccer player Caroline Gamache. Purdue began national tournament play this week. Gamache, a red-shirt junior, is giving up her last year of athletic eligibility next year to get a start out on the mission field with an internship in China beginning next semester. Here's the article: http://www.sharingthevictory.com/vsItemDisplay.lsp?method=display&objectid=3D01B651-79CD-42A0-A77672508B902792 (originally found at: http://www.fca.org/).

Also, a note from "The Christian Sports Blog" about NASCAR Busch Series driver Morgan Shepherd, a Christian who drives the #89 "Victory in Jesus" car, and his annual trip to help the needy in the Virginia mountains each December: http://christiansportsblog.blogspot.com/2007/11/morgan-shepherd-bringing-christmas-to.html.

Here's another article about Redskins cornerback Shawn Springs and his dad, former Cowboy Ron Springs, who is in a coma. Here's a quote from Shawn about his dad's condition:

"I'm a little more at peace about the situation and I feel whatever happens, whether God comes and he wakes right up or it's his time, I have accepted that my father is in a better place and it was meant to be," Shawn Springs said. "I just have faith, but I'm also very real about the situation. Not many people have ever awakened from this type of coma. At this point I think it's more of a decision that my stepmom has to make in what she wants to do and I have to come to grips with it."

Here's the article: http://www.dallascowboys.com/news.cfm?id=40D4E0FC-CFC0-D797-325F7C16EBE59A1C.

Next, an article about Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, a Christian, who is one of the nominees for the Maxwell Award, which is given to the nation's best all-around player. It's a step below the Heisman Trophy. He's also one of the nominees for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award. Here's the article: http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news;_ylt=Av4ltU70NjmYXmmMNj5LMCh.T4h4?slug=ap-awardsfinalists&prov=ap&type=lgns.

Here's a webpage with articles about what MLB teams have done to help their communities in honor of Thanksgiving. I may include some of the individual teams' articles here after I have a chance to read them. Here's the webpage: http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/community/mlb_spirit/index.jsp.

Also, a short article about Steelers offensive tackle Max Starks hosting his second annual Max Starks and the Home Team Thanksgiving Food Drive yesterday: http://www.wpxi.com/news/14659150/detail.html.

Just a note: Last Sunday, the boys high school basketball team from Blackhawk Christian School in Fort Wayne, IN, came to first service at my church. They were in the area to attend a men's basketball practice and game at IU last weekend, and stayed at a hotel in our town, which is 20 miles from IU. The came to church for first service at 8:30, because the IU game was at noon that day. We all just thought that it was the neatest thing that they would get up that early and come to our church. I just thought that I would share that. Here's the school's website: http://www.blackhawkchristian.org/.

Lastly, I think that I've figured something out with the articles that I've posted on my Facebook profile. I subscribed to the RSS feed for the articles, and I think that anyone can access them from that page. Here's the page, and I hope that this works: http://www.facebook.com/feeds/share_posts.php?id=559889093&viewer=559889093&key=e7408885b8&format=rss20.

Happy Thanksgiving! I have several articles to post, so I think that I'm going to divide them into two groups and post one now and one after that or tomorrow.

The first article is about Georgia head football coach Mark Richt, a Christian, and how he's been more energetic on the sidelines during games recently to get the team to be more energetic too. The team had been lethargic, so he thought that by being more energetic himself, it would help the team. Here's a quote about his new approach from Dave Van Halanger, the team's director of strength and conditioning:

"It's calculated fun," said Dave Van Halanger, the team's director of strength and conditioning. "There is nothing that is done without an immense amount of thought and prayer."

Here's the article: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/uga/stories/2007/11/13/gafoot_1114_3DOT.html.

Here's an article about Chiefs quarterback Brodie Croyle, a Christian, before his first NFL start last Saturday against the Colts in Indianapolis. By the way, he played well, but the Colts still won (GO COLTS! Sorry!). Here's the article: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AtVDuIPXPt5UgxQudPROaHl.T4h4?slug=ap-brodiethekid&prov=ap&type=lgns.

Next, an article about Cubs outfield prospect Sam Fuld and his playing with juvenile diabetes. A neat thing mentioned in the article is that when Fuld was twelve he got to meet and talk to then Tigers pitcher Bill Gullickson, who also has juvenile diabetes. Because of that, Fuld now makes a point to talk with kids with the disease now. He recently received the Stenson Award for leadership in the Arizona Fall League. Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071114&content_id=2300768&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc.

Here's an article about retired Panthers safety Mike Minter giving his testimony at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes banquet in Nebraska recently. Here's a good quote from him:

"You can't have football all of your life, but you can have Jesus Christ," he said. "Right now, I'm former Nebraska Cornhusker and former Carolina Panther, but I'll never be former saved person or former follower of Christ."

Here's a quote from the article about some of the other athletes and coaches involved in the banquet:

In addition, Nebraska center Brett Byford spoke of his faith journey that led him from tiny Hartsville, Ala., to being the starting center for the Husker football team.

Broken Bow cross country and track standout Katie White was named the high school athlete of the year, Hastings College offensive lineman Brandon Jacobitz was awarded the college athlete of the year and Kenesaw girls' basketball coach Jodi Jacoby was given the Influence Award for being a positive minister of the FCA Mission.

Here's the article: http://www.theindependent.com/stories/11142007/spo_fcabanquet14.shtml (originally found at: http://www.bpsports.net/bpsports.asp?ID=5711).

Also, an article about how IU wide receiver James Hardy was and is still influenced by late IU head football coach Terry Hoeppner, a Christian, who died last summer from brain cancer: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071115/SPORTS0601/711150467/1070/SPORTS0602.

Here's an article about Reds outfielder Josh Hamilton speaking at a Fellowship of Christian Athletes banquet in his native North Carolina about how he overcame his drug addiction to return to baseball and have a successful rookie season this year: http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/story/773398.html/ (originally found at: http://www.fca.org/).

Next, an article on Padres pitcher Jake Peavy, a Christian, winning the NL Cy Young Award unanimously last week. Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Webb, also a Christian, finished second after winning the award last year. Here's a quote from him about winning the award after fighting through injuries last season:

Peavy spent part of his conference call on Thursday praising the work of the team training staff.

"Those guys are the backbone of what any player on the San Diego Padres does," Peavy said. "Those guys see me every day. In-season, we modified the amount of work I did, especially my arm routine and shoulder. I feel very fortunate and blessed to be healthy."

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071114&content_id=2300731&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb. Also, FCA re-posted this article about Peavy from their magazine last month after he won the award: http://www.sharingthevictory.com/vsItemDisplay.lsp&objectID=60ECE133-3E2D-430B-B0FCBDE53AEBEA3A&method=display (originally found at: http://www.fca.org/).

Here's an article about the importance of the Colts bench this year with all of the injuries that they have had to deal with this season. One of those players is wide receiver Craphonso Thorpe, who a couple of weeks ago played the first offensive snaps of his career after bouncing around the NFL in his three-year career, and then played some more last Sunday. Here's a quote from him about getting a chance to play:

"I came in here and checked to see my name up there on the nameplate," Thorpe said with a nod toward the top of his locker. "I thank God every day I walk in this building and see it."

Here's the article: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071116/SPORTS03/711160410/1100.

Also, an article about the Braves, pitcher Chuck James and his wife helping to delivery complete Thanksgiving dinners to five needy families in the neighborhood around Turner Field last week: http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071116&content_id=2302300&vkey=news_atl&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl.

Here's an article about Packers defensive coordinator Bob Sanders, a Christian, and how he's overcome a stuttering problem to become a successful NFL coach. Here's a quote from him about it:

He went on to play collegiately at Davidson, but when he wanted to get into coaching, he was told he couldn't. Not with the way he talked.

"There were a lot of naysayers who said, 'You can't be a coach, because you have to be a school teacher, and nobody will ever hire you because you can't teach a class because you can 't speak,' '' Sanders recalled. "And then, when I wanted to be a college coach, they said, 'You can't go into anybody's home and recruit as bad as you stutter.' But sometimes the good Lord, he'll take the dumb things in the world and confound the wise."

Here's the article: http://www.madison.com/wsj/home/sports/index.php?ntid=257551&ntpid=1 (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/12).

Lastly, for now, a couple of articles about the IU football team beating arch-rival Purdue to win the Old Oaken Bucket last Saturday. The win was huge because it gave them a good chance of making a bowl for the first time since 1993 and fulfilling late head coach Terry Hoeppner's goal to "Play 13" (12 regular season games and a bowl game). The win was so emotional for the team that there were many tears shed in the locker room after the game. Here's the first article: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071118/SPORTS/711180396/1069/SPORTS0601, and the second article: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071118/COLUMNISTS01/711180398.

Bowdens, MLB, NBA, and music

Hi! First, a good Christian article about Rockies infielder Jamey Carroll from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes' Sharing the Victory Magazine from last year, since the Rockies are still going in the playoffs (make sure and check out the "Related Stories" link on the upper right side of the article too for more): http://www.sharingthevictory.com/vsItemDisplay.lsp?method=display&objectid=4AEA9B47-A348-4BAC-8D4DF6BEDDC86ABD.

Here's a good Christian article about the Christian coaching legacy that Florida State football head coach Bobby Bowden passed down the his son, Auburn football head coach Tommy Bowden: http://www.bpsports.net/bpsports.asp?ID=5676.

Next, another article on Jamey Carroll, and his teammate, pitcher Ramon Ortiz, and their unlikely role in the Rockies beating the Padres in a one-game playoff for the NL Wild Card title on October 1st (yes, I'm still behind!). Here's a quote from Ortiz, the game's winning pitcher, about his role in the game:

"I thanked God, I don't know, 100 times. The thing is I stayed positive every day and did my routine. I'm very happy."

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071002&content_id=2245374&vkey=news_col&fext=.jsp&c_id=col&partnered=rss_col.

Here's a good blog post from Diamondbacks 1st baseman Tony Clark, a Christian, from last Tuesday about his day off the day before. He was able to spend it going to his kids soccer games and practices, which he's usually not able to do. But how many athletes would spend a rare day off running around going to their kids sports and not doing their own thing. I thought that was neat. Here's the post: http://tonyclark.mlblogs.com/tonyclark/2007/10/its_fun_playing.html. With the Diamondbacks and Rockies continuing in the playoffs, you can keep checking both Clark's (http://tonyclark.mlblogs.com/) and Rockies 1st baseman Todd Helton's (also a Christian) (http://toddhelton.mlblogs.com/) blogs, updated pretty much daily.

Also, an interesting story about Nuggets guard Allen Iverson and some friends stopping to check on an overturned car on a highway in Virginia last week. Iverson asked the ladies, still hanging upside-down in their car if they were okay, and surprisingly they recognized him, even in that situation. Iverson and his friends stayed with the ladies until emergency help arrived, and even checked on them at the hospital later that night. Here's a good quote from a friend of the ladies about Iverson:

Iverson said he has not heard from the women since, but another woman who knew about the accident wrote a letter to the Philadelphia Daily News to commend Iverson for being a good Samaritan.

"We, the public, seem to hear only the negative stories, but never the small acts of kindness he performs," wrote April Snoparsky, of Boston. "This story reaffirms my belief that just because he's 'street' doesn't mean he isn't one of the good guys."

Here's the article: http://www.rockymountainnews.com/drmn/nba/article/0,2777,DRMN_23922_5712295,00.html (originally found at: http://www.nba.com/news/478832.html?rss=true).

Here's an article about Padres outfielder Brian Giles volunteering his time to visit at children's hospitals: http://mlbplayers.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071002&content_id=2245607&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp.

Next, an article about Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Webb, a Christian, and about how he improved over the second half of the season from his struggles during the first half. The second half of the season he dominated to lead the Diamondbacks to first place in the West and the playoffs. Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071002&content_id=2245917&vkey=ps2007news&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

During one of last weekend's Indians/Yankees games, there was a short segment on former Yankees great Bobby Richardson, a Christian. He was the MVP of the 1960 World Series. In the segment it also mentioned that he is a volunteer speaker for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, which I thought was neat.

Lastly, last week I got the 2007 WOW CD, but I haven't had time to listen to it yet. I just thought that I'd share that it does have a website: http://wowonline.com/.

MLB, football, etc.

First of all, an article about Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins, a Christian, credentials for the MVP Award. Two of the top candidates for the NL MVP Award are Christians, with Rockies outfielder Matt Holliday along with Rollins. Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070930&content_id=2242483&vkey=news_phi&fext=.jsp&c_id=phi&partnered=rss_phi.

Here's an article about Royals 1st baseman/DH Mike Sweeney taking out a full-page ad in the Kansas City Star last Sunday to thank the Royals fans and organization for all their support over the many years that he's played there. This could have been Sweeney's last season with the Royals, as he is a free agent. Here's a quote from him about it:

He has said he would like to play another year, taking a reduced role. But club officials have been noncommittal both to him and to the media.

"I talked with [general manager Dayton Moore] yesterday and he said he wasn't sure what direction they'll want to go in," Sweeney said Sunday. "But if this is my last game with the Royals, I know I've been blessed like very few people have ever been blessed. I've loved every minute of it."

Here's the article: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3043675.

Next, a good Christian article about recently retired Panthers safety Mike Minter, who is now going into the ministry: http://savedinsports.wordpress.com/2007/10/01/minter-retires-into-ministry/. Also, the article includes a link to Minter's website: http://www.mikeminter.com/index2.html and a link to the Ruckus House Learning Center in Harrisburg, North Carolina, a Christian based daycare/preschool/afterschool program that he runs with fellow Christians Panthers defensive end Mike Rucker, Rams runningback Stephen Davis, and Bears wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad: http://www.ruckushouse.com/.

Here's several new articles this month from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes' Sharing the Victory Magazine. The first one is about Padres pitcher Jake Peavy, a favorite for the Cy Young Award this year (includes video): http://www.sharingthevictory.com/vsItemDisplay.lsp&objectID=60ECE133-3E2D-430B-B0FCBDE53AEBEA3A&method=display. Also, the article includes a link to the FCA's Bowden Breakfast (http://www.bowdenbreakfast.com/), which is held annually the morning of the Clemson/Flordia State game, where Tommy Bowden coaches against his dad, Florida State head coach Bobby Bowden.

Here's an FCA article about Olivia Brock, the kicker for the Conner High School football team in Kentucky. Yes, she's a girl playing football. Here's the good article about her: http://www.sharingthevictory.com/vsItemDisplay.lsp&objectID=E5079E65-22FA-490C-B4FF2F4953AE4128&method=display. Someone who's helped her with her kicking has been former Bengals kicker Doug Pelfrey, who's now involved with FCA and his own organization Kick's for Kids: http://kicksforkids.org/.

Also, an FCA article on Auburn football chaplain Chette Williams and his new memoir Hard Fighting Soldier: Finding God in Trials, Tragedies, and Triumphs. Also included in the article is former Auburn and current Giants linebacker Reggie Torbor. Here's the aritcle: http://www.sharingthevictory.com/vsItemDisplay.lsp&objectID=710FE6B0-36F6-4AEF-BE0E22476E0D6C5B&method=display.

MLB, NFL, and basektball

First, an article about Nationals pitcher Luis Ayala and his return in June from Tommy John elbow ligament transplant surgery. Here's a quote about his being able to return to pitching again:

Now, every day that I step out on the field is a day I feel blessed. I'm confident in saying that I feel 100 percent physically now.

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070911&content_id=2201432&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp.

Here's an article about Marlins 3rd baseman Miguel Cabrera and his recent visit to a children's hospital in Miami. He came to brighten up the kids spirits, but his spirits were brightened too. Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070911&content_id=2201722&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Next, an article about Padres pitcher Jake Peavy, a Christian, and his being ready to pitch on short rest when needed during the regular season and/or post-season. The last two years he had been injured and couldn't do that. Here's the article with a video: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070912&content_id=2203745&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Here's an article about Broncos punt returner Domenik Hixon, the guy who Bills tight end Kevin Everett was tackling when Everett suffered a life-threatening spinal cord injury during the Broncos/Bills game on September 9th. Hixon felt guilty about the injury, although he had nothing to do with it. Everett was injured because of the way that he hit Hixon. After doctors initially thought that Everett would never walk again, he has been slowly improving and his outlook looks good. Here's what Hixon had to say about hearing the first good news of Everett's improvement:

"It was a big relief," Hixon said. "That just brought a smile to my face. Prayers were answered. The power of prayers, man. Hopefully, he makes a full recovery." ...

"My thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family," Hixon said.

Here's the article: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-broncos-everett&prov=ap&type=lgns. Here's the latest on Everett's recovery: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070917/ap_on_sp_fo_ne/fbn_bills_everett_hurt.

Also, an article about some of the Colts players spending part of their off day last Tuesday with kids in Indianapolis schools reading, coloring, and speaking to them. The players involved included tight end Gijon Robinson, wide receiver Trent Shelton, defensiveback Brannon Condren, offensive lineman Travis Leitko, tight end Bryan Fletcher, and wide receiver Aaron Moorehead. Here's the article with pictures: http://www.colts.com/sub.cfm?page=article7&news_id=970d1eab-73ef-4b1b-8924-f55a6ae5d2f0.

Here's a good blog post from the Saved in Sports blog about Rockets center Dikembe Mutombo, a Christian, and his humanitarian work in Africa, including his native Democratic Republic of the Congo. Recently he was part of the group of current and former NBA players and coaches that worked in South Africa with NBA's Basketball Without Borders. Here's the post: http://savedinsports.wordpress.com/2007/09/16/dikembe-mutombo-of-the-houston-rockets/. Here's one of the articles from the blog post with the players and coaches talking about their trip to South Africa: http://www.nba.com/global/bwb_africa_fran1_070912.html. Here's a link to the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation's website: http://www.dmf.org/. Also, here's another article that I found about Mutombo and the Basketball Without Borders trip: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/5130828.html (originally found at: http://www.nba.com/news/462298.html?rss=true).

Another note about Mutombo: he's going to play this coming season with the Rockets and then retire. Here's a quote from him about the Rockets:

"It's a great organization," Mutombo said, according to KRIV. "I have a great relationship with the owner. I have a great relationship with the mayor and I love the city. I have been blessed."

Here's the article: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3021060.

Next, an article about Patriots lineman Joe Andruzzi was diagnosed in May with with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. It's an aggressive but treatable form of cancer, and he's doing well with his treatments. Here's a quote from his former teammate, Patriots runningback Kevin Faulk:

Running back Kevin Faulk gets updates through his wife, who is in e-mail contact with Jennifer Andruzzi (Andruzzi's wife).

"You pray and you believe that he will (beat the cancer)," Faulk said. "You never know what can happen, but in the long run that's what you want to happen, that he beats the thing. He's a strong guy."

Here's the article: http://cbs.sportsline.com/nfl/story/10349880/2.

Here's an article about Colts defensive lineman Gary Brackett, a Christian, and his important role as the defensive captain, a job that he takes very seriously: http://www.colts.com/sub.cfm?page=article7&news_id=43ab772b-7f59-405c-b075-1eb06f4ba647.

Also, an article about Gonzaga basketball head coach Mark Few and his wife Marcy hosting the annual Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Classic and BasketBALL Gala in August that raised $750,000 for cancer: http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-baskbl/stories/091307aap.html.

sports misc.

First of all, the last three articles from the NBA's trip to South Africa to conduct a basketball camp and help out the community. The players involved were Spurs forward Bruce Bowen, Bobcats center Primoz Brezec, Hawks guard/forward Josh Childress, Suns forwad/center Sean Marks, Magic forward Pat Garrity, Kings guard Kevin Martin, Rockets center Dikembe Mutombo, Bobcats forward/center Emeka Okafor, Knicks forward Malik Rose, and former NBA players Jim Jackson and Steve Smith. Here's the articles: http://www.nba.com/global/bwb_africa_day_3_recap.html, http://www.nba.com/global/bwb_africa_final_day_recap.html, and an article about Emeka Okafor's reflections on the trip: http://www.nba.com/global/okafor_070909.html.

Here's a neat article written in a first-person format by Will Jauss, the 11-year-old son of Dodgers coach Dave Jauss about he and his family's summer with his dad. During the school year he and his family live in Boston, but they spend the summer in Los Angeles with his dad while he's coaching. The article gives some neat insight into what it's like to be a "baseball kid": http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AsJvdQFHAQsKOUa9BT.Uax05nYcB?slug=ys-willjauss091007&prov=yhoo&type=lgns.

Next, an article about Shock 6-8 center Katie Feenstra, a Christian, who played collegiately at Liberty University, a Chrisitan college. Her team is currently playing in the WNBA Finals against Phoenix. Before this season she was traded to the Shock after spending two years with San Antonio, which was good for the Michigan native. Here's a couple of quotes from the article:

Feenstra could have stayed closer to home to go to college and/or played in any major conference she wanted to. Her faith led her to Liberty, where her older sister also played. Liberty has dominated the Big South and made the NCAA Sweet 16 in Feenstra's senior season. ...

"I think they figured, 'Katie's from Liberty, she's a Christian, she's gonna play soft, she's from the Big South -- what's that?' I had to prove myself. I had to do that in San Antonio, and I had to do that here in Detroit. So it's a battle, constantly, but I think it's started to change."

Here's the article: http://sports.espn.go.com/wnba/columns/story?columnist=voepel_mechelle&id=3012543.

Here's an article about Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte, a Christian, winning the MLB Clutch Performer of the Month Award for August: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070910&content_id=2199636&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Also, an article about Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson, a Christian, winning the NL Player of the Week Award for the week ending September 9th. Here's a quote from him:

But Wilson seems to have found a comfort zone while hitting in the no. 8 spot for the Pirates. He's averaging .304 in that position, tops in the NL.

"I try to take pride in everything I do," said Wilson. "If I'm going to be hitting eighth, I'm going to try to be the best eighth hitter that I can be. Wherever I hit, I have to do my job."

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070910&content_id=2200103&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Here's an article about Auburn football head coach Tommy Tuberville supporting a fellow Christian football coach, embattled Mississippi State football head coach Sylveter Croom. Ironically, Mississippi State upset Auburn today, which I guess proved Tuberville right! Here's the article: http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news;_ylt=AmKxUPXfeklpMyMa1TCYl_l.T4h4?slug=ap-tuberville-croom&prov=ap&type=lgns.

Next, an article about John Jackson, an Indianapolis-area guy who is private contractor working for the U.S. Department of Defense in Iraq, and a huge Colts fan. Here's an interesting quote about him and Colts head coach Tony Dungy, a Christian:

The father of a 25-year-old daughter, Jackson hopes to one day meet Colts coach Tony Dungy, whose work with All-Pro Dads inspired Jackson to help create an Iraq chapter.

"This is a guy who epitomizes everything I think a man should want to be," Jackson said.

Here's the article: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070911/SPORTS03/709110397.

Here's an article about Heat guard Dwayne Wade winning the NBA's Community Assist Award for August: http://www.nba.com/heat/community/wade_communityassist_070911.html?rss=true.

Also, an article about the six finalists for the MLB Players Association's Man of the Year Award. One finalist was chosen from each division by the fans, and then last week the players then voted on a winner from among the six finalists. The finalists are Cardinals 1st baseman Albert Pujols (a Christian), Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, Twins outfielder Torii Hunter (a Christian), Angels outfielder Vladimir Guerrero, Mets pitcher Tom Glavine, and Padres pitcher Jake Peavy (a Christian). Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070911&content_id=2201399&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Lastly, I had been wondering if Reds outfielder Josh Hamilton, a Chrisitan, would be eligible for the NL Comeback Player of the Year Award. Unfortunately, a player had to have played in the Majors before coming back, and Hamilton had only played in the Minors. Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070913&content_id=2206844&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

sports misc.

First, a good article about Colts head coach Tony Dungy, a Christian: http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070906/COL05/709060327/1009/col05 (originally found at: http://www.aia.com/news.aspx?newsitem=248).

Here's a neat quote from Red Sox pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka about the AL Rookie of the Year race. Matsuzaka and fellow Japanese teammate Hideki Okajima are both considered rookies even though they've pitched in Japan for several years before coming to the U.S. this year. Another Red Sox, 2nd baseman Dustin Pedroia, is a true rookie. Here's what Matsuzaka had to say about it:

"[Matsuzaka] had an interesting answer," [Red Sox manager Terry] Francona said. "[He said], 'I've already been Rookie of the Year.' And he pointed at Pedroia and said, 'That's your Rookie of the Year.' I remember thinking, it was just in passing, but I remember thinking, 'Pretty mature attitude.' I don't want to hurt someone's chances of receiving awards ever, but I loved his attitude."

Matsuzaka was named Rookie of the Year of the Pacific League in 1999, his first year with the Seibu Lions.

Also, an article about Fever forward Tamika Catchings, a Christian, and the torn Achilles that she suffered in the decisive game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Shock. She should be ready for the next WNBA season, but will miss playing overseas this year. Here's a great quote from her about her recovery from the injury:

"I know God's not done with me yet," she said. "I'm just going to keep pushing forward."

Lastly, a note about seriously injured Bills tight end Kevin Everett, who sustained a serious spinal cord injury during the Bills game against the Broncos last Sunday:

EVERETT IMPROVES The word "miracle" is being tossed around regarding the new developments in the ongoing physical battles of Buffalo Bills' tight end Kevin Everett. One day after the doctor who operated on Everett announced that it was unlikely Everett would walk again, things looked remarkably better. As Everett began to awaken partially from his induced sedation, he moved his arms and legs--providing hope for a more complete recovery. The people treating Everett used a new therapy immediately after the injury, one in which he was injected with a cold saline solution to minimize swelling. That may have contributed to the surprising good news just one day after surgery. As did the prayers of thousands.

To go along with that, here's what Falcons wide receiver Joe Horn had to say about Kevin Everett and his injury:

"Sometimes you need to focus on what's life and what's real," wide receiver Joe Horn said. "After seeing what happened to Kevin, God makes things happen for a reason. My prayers go out to him and his family.

"But you have to sit back sometimes, after playing 11, 12 years and realized that you are blessed. We are blessed to be physically able to play this game."
