MLB, football, and basketball

Hello. I've got some extra time because of the snow and ice outside, so I thought that I would go ahead and post mid-week instead of waiting till the end. The first article I have to post tonight is about former Astros pitcher Trever Miller, who signed as a free agent with the Rays last week. Miller played with the Astros the last two years, but had played for the Rays for the two years before that. Here's a quote from him about returning to play for the team near where he lives in Florida:

"It's been a blessing to be able to play big-league baseball at home,'' Miller said. "I didn't think it would happen again. ..."

Here's the article: http://blogs.tampabay.com/rays/2008/02/rays-add-trever.html (originally found at: http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080208&content_id=2368504&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp).

Here's a good article about Georgia football head coach Mark Richt and his son Jon, both Christians. On Signing Day last week Jon, a senior at Prince Avenue Christian School in Athens, GA, signed to play football with Clemson, whose head coach Tommy Bowden (also a Christian) is a good friend of Mark. Mark thought that there would be less pressure on him and Mark if he were to play for someone other than him. I thought that it was neat that Mark went to Jon signing day ceremony before going back to his office to check on his own recruits. Here's the article: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/columns/story?columnist=schlabach_mark&id=3234394 (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/233).

Next, an article about a group of Orioles fans, the Oriole Advocates, who have a neat program called "Cardboard to Leather". The group collects new and used baseball equipment (bats, balls, gloves, uniforms, etc.) to donated to kids in impoverished countries, like in Latin America. These kids would normally have to make-do with whatever they could find for equipment, like making gloves out of cardboard and balls out of tape. Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080207&content_id=2367527&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp.

Here's an article on NC State women's basketball head coach Kay Yow, a Christian who is fighting breast cancer. This month is "Think Pink" campaign for breast cancer awareness with the women's NCAA teams, and several teams are wearing pink uniforms for one game to raise awareness. One of those teams was Yow's NC State team last week, whose uniforms all also had the name "YOW" on the back to honor her. Everyone at these games--players, coaches, fans, etc.--wear pink. Money is being raised for the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, part of the Jimmy V Fund for cancer, named after the late former NC State men's basketball coach Jim Valvano who coached with Yow. He died from cancer several years ago. Here's the article: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncw/notebook?page=notebook/dish080207.

Also, an article about Cowboys linebacker Greg Ellis, a Christian, whose comeback this season from a torn Achilles tendon last season was punctuated by winning the NFL Comeback Player of the Year Award and being named to the Pro Bowl: http://news.aol.com/story/_a/comeback-led-cowboys-lb-greg-ellis-all/n20080208170809990011?ecid=RSS0001.

Here's an article about Kansas guard Brandon Rush, who tore his knee last summer which caused him to come back to college for his senior year this year instead of going on to the NBA. Here's a couple of quotes from his head coach Bill Self and him about it:

"There's no doubt Brandon's injury has been a blessing for the program," Self said. "No doubt at all. But I wouldn't go so far as to say it's been a blessing for Brandon. If he'd never gotten hurt, he'd be in the NBA right now, and that's his ultimate dream. But if he continues to progress, his draft status will be improved, in my opinion." ...

"'Blessing in disguise' _that's what my mama said. This might be a blessing in disguise," Rush said. "My mom always knows what she's talking about, especially about basketball."

Here's the article: http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/02/08/sports/BKC-T25-Kansas-Rush.php (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/260).

Next, an article about Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez, who donated a custom car for a Boston children's hospital to auction off to raise money: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080209&content_id=2369324&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Here's an article about Bengals linebacker David Pollack, a Christian, who has a big decision coming up about whether or not he's going to attempt to comeback after a serious neck injury or not. Here's a couple of quotes from him about it:

“Even if I can’t play football again, I feel blessed that I’ve been able to play a kids’ game this long,” he said. “The experiences along the way have made me a better person, a stronger person. You learn a lot about life and who really cares about you when things like this happen.” ...

Deeply spiritual, he says he prays daily, not to play football again, but for direction and strength.

Here's the article: http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/ajc/sportscolumns/entries/2008/02/09/pollack_talks_a.html (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/7).

Also, an article about new Royals manager Trey Hillman, a Christian, and his style of managing: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080210&content_id=2369800&vkey=spt2008news&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Here's an article about former Diamondbacks 1st baseman Tony Clark, a Christian, signing as a free agent with his hometown Padres this week: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3240246.

Next, an article about another Christian MLB free agent Mike Sweeney signing to play with the A's this week after having spent his whole career with the Royals: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3240225.

Lastly, a quote from a Q & A article with IU center D.J. White:

Once you sign your first NBA contract, what's the first thing you're going to buy?

If I am blessed enough to sign a contract, that would be great, but right now I am focused on my senior season and leading my team to a championship.

mostly MLB misc., etc.

First, another note about new Padres infielder Morgan Ensberg's (a Christian) thoughts about his first series against his former Astros teammates, this one from the Astros point-of-view: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070817&content_id=2154670&vkey=news_hou&fext=.jsp&c_id=hou.

Here's the results of the Red Sox radio telethon to raise money for a local cancer hospital:

Final Jimmy Fund figure: On Saturday, the results were in. The sixth annual WEEI/NESN Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon raised more than $3.68 million. Dodgers owner Frank McCourt gave the largest gift, a record $50,000.

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070818&content_id=2156041&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Next, a neat note about Diamondbacks pitcher Brandon Webb, a Christian, during his start last Friday in Atlanta against the Braves, a complete game shutout, which was during his 42 consecutive scoreless innings streak:

As he [Webb] stood in the on-deck circle in the ninth inning on Friday, a couple of Braves fans in the front row said to him, "Aren't you getting tired yet?"

Webb told them that he was still feeling good and they told him that they thought he was pitching well, to which he said, "Thank you very much."

The scene took place in front of D-backs CEO Jeff Moorad and team president Derrick Hall, both of whom were amazed that despite the fact that he was in the middle of his streak, Webb still acknowledged the fans.

"Are you kidding me?" Hall said. "That tells you right there what kind of person Brandon Webb is."

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070818&content_id=2156366&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Here's a quote from Cubs 1st baseman/outfielder Daryle Ward about teammate Cliff Floyd after Floyd's father passed away:

"At first, I think I did a little too much thinking," Ward said. "There were a lot of thoughts going on, thinking about Cliff and his family and what was going on there, and feeling sorry in that situation. That's tough -- I thank God I still have my father here. We're sending our prayers out to him. I know it's got to be tough."

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/gameday_recap.jsp?ymd=20070818&content_id=2156080&vkey=recap&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc&partnered=rss_chc.

Also, a couple of articles about Diamondbacks pitcher Micah Owings huge game at the plate last Saturday. He didn't do that bad pitching (3 runs on 3 homers with 7 strike outs and 0 walks), but that was overshadowed by his hitting. He went 4-5, with 2 homers, 6 RBI's, and 4 runs scored in one of the best offensive games for a pitcher ever. And to make it even better, it was in Atlanta, an hour from his hometown. He had 50 friends and family there to watch him. Here's a couple of quotes from him in an article about the game:

A humble, deeply religious man, Owings is an intense competitor, who is gracious in the time he gives the media, but if you expect him to beat his chest or say something outrageous you'll be disappointed.

"I'm just blessed," Owings said. "Early on in the season I was racking up some 'W's'. I had to learn some things and iron some things out. To be back home and have the game that I did tonight, that's all I can say, I'm unbelievably blessed." ...

"It's up there," he said when asked where this game ranked among all his others. "Maybe one of the best ever. Maybe after it slows down I can reflect a little bit. Right now all I can think is how blessed I am."

Here's that article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/gameday_recap.jsp?ymd=20070818&content_id=2156373&vkey=recap&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

The other article about Owings is about him and his family and their reactions to the game. Here's a couple of quotes, one from him and one from his sister Abi:

"I'm a believer, and I just kept praying," Owings said. "I've got a big God, and he did a lot of big things for me tonight." ...

"My favorite part was the part where he pointed up to the sky, because we believe that this is a God thing," Abi said. "We all prayed together before the game, and I think God really helped [Owings] tonight."

Here's that article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070818&content_id=2157530&vkey=news_ari&fext=.jsp&c_id=ari.

Here's an article about Bucks guard Michael Redd, a Christian, who is playing for Team USA in the Tournament of the Americas: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/basketball/2007-08-19-reddteamusa_N.htm?csp=34.

Next, an article about new Braves 1st baseman Mark Teixeira, a Christian, on his having to adjust to National League pitching last week after having been traded from the Rangers: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070819&content_id=2158050&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Here's an article about Devil Rays shortstop Ben Zobrist, a Christian, having to go on the disabled list last Sunday: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070819&content_id=2158067&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Also, an article about Braves pitcher John Smoltz, a Christian, setting the Braves all-time franchise career strikeout record: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070819&content_id=2158289&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb&partnered=rss_mlb.
Here's a great note about Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and his legal troubles from Sports Spectrum's "The Daily" this week:

HOPELESS? Imagine for a moment being Michael Vick. Your once charmed life of adulation and fortune is crumbling all around you. Whereas at one time your biggest problem was the occasional naysayer who said you weren't really a quarterback in the truest NFL sense of the term, now you have more problems than a PETA person at a hog auction. Not only do you face the wrath of the public and the decision of a federal judge, but now you also face the prospect that the state of Virginia will come after you with possible further prison time. Your NFL career is pretty much over, and you are so hated by massive groups of people that you can hardly chance going out into public. Imagine having all that against you. Where would be any hope--any reason to lift your head from the pillow and face another day? Hope for Mr. Vick could be found in the same source that rescued Chuck Colson from his Watergate-caused degradation. Or that lifted Josh Hamilton from sure destruction of his career because of drugs. That hope is Jesus Christ--who can forgive anyone, even a dog-abuser. Why not pray for Michael Vick--pray that he will allow someone into his life who can guide him to hope--guide him to Jesus, the light of the world.

Lastly, some more on the "Mark Teixeira" song that the two guys at Auburn, Tyler Crawford and Andrew Hall, wrote about the Braves Mark Teixeira. Here's the lyrics to the song from another blog:

Four and a half games back and I don’t Te-care-a
You know why we got Mark Teixeira
Got a new Braves jersey that I’m gonna wear-a
And written on the back is Mark Teixeira
The Mets are scared cause their lead’s gonna narr-a
They’re lookin’ over their shoulder at Mark Teixeira

Chorus:We got Fred McGriff back in ‘93
Hampton’s out cause of injury
Schuerholz smiles cause he is happy and Bobby says,“Let’s go Mark T.”

The National League it just ain’t fair-a
The Atlanta Braves got Mark Teixeira
Chipper and Andruw make a mighty nice pair-a
Let’s make it a trio add Mark Teixeira
A side effect is mild hysteria
The medical reason is Mark Teixeira

Chorus

Bridge:Scott Thorman stinks and Julio is old
What did Shuerholz do? Must’ve sold his Sooouuulll

Pitchers beware cause he’s gonna scare ya
Throw him a strike now if you dare-a
He could probably steal on Yogi Berra(NOT Yogi Bear-a)
Biggest thing in Georgia since Scarlet O’Hara
If I were a woman I’d probably marry ya.

And that’s not gay cause its Mark Teixeira.

football, MLB, & NBA

First, an article on Colts back-up safety Matt Giordano, a Christian, on the upcoming season Here's a quote from Giordano:

“It’s something I really am trying to do, to be great strong safety and a great free safety in this defense. Hopefully, Lord willing, no one will go down, but if something like that happens, I can step in and play both spots. Coaches don’t have to worry.

“They can know and trust I know what I’m doing and I’ll get the job done.”

Here's the article: http://www.colts.com/sub.cfm?page=article7&news_id=24c64c76-9e97-43ab-b7c7-9d75fbb59021.

Here's a Christian article on former Maryland quarterback Sam Hollenbach, who is trying to catch on with a NFL team. Right now he's waiting on God has for him in football or not. Here's the article: http://www.bpsports.net/bpsports.asp?ID=5647.

Next, an article about Devil Rays shortstop Ben Zobrist, a Christian. He was trying to once again prove himself as the Rays starting shortstop, after he lost the job earlier this season and was sent down to Triple-A Durham. Unfortunately last night, after this article was written Zobrist strained his right oblique and was put on the disabled list, possibly for the rest of the season. Here's a quote from him from the article about his trying to earn the shortstop job:

Zobrist is a devout Christian, which has prompted some to question his competitiveness. He smiled when asked if his faith has made him any less of a competitor.

"In my life, I've been the most competitive person to myself -- against myself," Zobrist said. "And that's been my worst enemy at times. So I can't really look around at other people and make my comparison based on what other people are doing. I've got to know inside that I'm giving it everything I can, and that I can be satisfied at the end of the day because of that. People can say what they want, and they can have their opinions and they're certainly entitled to that, but that should not affect what I do."

Zobrist said he's learning that he can't control everything.

"It's a simple truth, but sometimes, it takes us longer to figure out than others," Zobrist said. "But I'm learning that God is a lot more in control than I thought."

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070815&content_id=2149962&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Other NBA players in the tournament were Celtics guard Ray Allen, Boston Celtics TV analyst Donny Marshall, former NBA player Aaron McKie, and Sonics guard Mike Wilks. Here's the article: http://www.nba.com/sixers/features/kevin_ollie_golf_070814.html?rss=true.

Also, an "interesting" Q & A article with Kings forward Ron Artest and his trip to Kenya to help others. Here's a quote from him about it:

You've been back for two weeks, have you had a chance to reflect on your trip to Kenya?"

It made me think of how good we have it over here, but at the same time it made me appreciate life. I got a chance to see the soul of the African American and I also got a chance to see tribes that still live like they did 400 years ago. I feel like whatever God gives you [you should be grateful for] or how ever you may be living now—some people think they are struggling in America—but they are not really struggling until they see what it's like over there. At the same time, the tribes live in what we would say is poverty, but they don’t consider it poverty. ... It made me appreciate life."

Here's the article: http://www.nba.com/kings/features/Ron_Summer_2007.html?rss=true.

Lastly, an article about the New Mexico State football wearing pink socks and their coaches will wear pink shirts during their game September 29th to help raise money breast cancer. The head coach Hal Mumme's wife June overcame the disease a few years ago. Here's the article: http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/stories/081507abq.html.

a lot of sports misc.

First, three columns on the death of Wake Forest men's basketball head coach Skip Prosser last week: http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/news?slug=dw-prosser072607&prov=yhoo&type=lgns.

The next one about Prosser is by Dick Vitale: http://espn.go.com/dickvitale/070726skipprosser.html.

The last one about Prosser is a good one by Andy Katz of ESPN about the reaction to his death by several other NCAA men's basketball coaches and how it made them think about the frenetic pace of their own lives while on the recruiting trail in July like Prosser was: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/story?columnist=katz_andy&id=2950594.

Here's a note about Georgia football head coach Mark Richt, a Christian, and his trying to reach out to his former player Odell Thurman of the Bengals. Thurman has been suspended for the season by the NFL for recurring drug and alcohol problems. Here's the note:

Richt trying to reach out to Thurman
Former Georgia player Odell Thurman is out of the NFL for the next year and Mark Richt is out of ways to reach him.

The coach has tried to get in touch with his former star linebacker just to check in on him and talk to him about the problems swirling around his life. But Richt has not had any luck yet.

"I really like Odell," Richt said Friday. "I just pray that he gets everything straight and takes advantage of the blessings that God has given him with his ability and his talent."

Thurman was suspended for all of last season after skipping a drug test and later being arrested for drunken driving. He asked NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to reinstate him for the 2007 season, but was turned down Thursday.

"I tell our players once you make a mistake you lose control of the consequences," Richt said at SEC media days. "You don't have any rights anymore. You have to abide by the authority over you and that is what he is doing right now."

Here's the webpage it's on: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/uga/stories/2007/07/27/thurman_0727_.html.

Next, a blog post from Colts head coach Tony Dungy, a Christian, partly on the retirement of left tackle Tarik Glenn last week. Here's a quote about it that I thought was good:

Back at work, it was good to get back into the routine. The only downside was Tarik Glenn's retirement. He had talked to me at the ESPY's about the possibility of retiring. I told him I wanted him to be sure in his mind it was the right thing for him and his family. I didn't want him to come back because he felt the team needed him, because we'll find another person to play left tackle. I only wanted him to come back if he really wanted in his heart to play. In the end, it was the right time for Tarik. He's at peace with his decision and that's what counts. He had a great 10 years and capped it off with a Super Bowl. So we'll miss him but we're all very happy for him.

Here's the blog post: http://www.mycolts.net/blogentry/09055d15-8079-4a7c-9c10-c5d6ec0f25df.

Here's an article about Dale Earnhardt, Inc. (DEI) president Max Siegel. I don't know if he's a Christian or not, but he is/was good friends with Tony Dungy and NFL Hall-of-Famer the late Reggie White, who are/were to great Christians. I know that doesn't necessarily mean anything, but I thought that I would include it for what it's worth: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070727/SPORTS0109/707270335/1052/SPORTS01.

Also, an article about Cubs outfielder Matt Murton, a Christian, being called back up from Triple-A Iowa after having been sent down earlier this year: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070727&content_id=2112980&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Here's an article about Braves rightfielder Jeff Francoeur, a Christian, and how he's hitting better overall this year, even though he's hitting fewer homers. He did, however, hit a homer tonight though (Go Braves!). Here's the article: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/2007/07/27/francoeur_0728.html.

Next, an article about the Bluffton University baseball team, the team from the Christian college that was involved in a deadly bus accident last March, and how they were given the royal treatment as guests of the Indians at their game last weekend: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AggDqIS8kOL0wFdNpxbns4d.T4h4?slug=ap-indians-bluffton&prov=ap&type=lgns.

Next, a couple of articles about former Padre Tony Gwynn and former Oriole Cal Ripken, Jr., before their induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame last Sunday. The first article is about Tony Gwynn that I again found in my local Sunday paper and then found online. Here's a quote from him about his career:

"I had no idea that all the things in my career were going to happen," he said. "I sure didn't see it. I just know the good Lord blessed me with ability, blessed me with good eyesight and a good pair of hands, and then I worked at the rest."

Here's the article: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/2007-07-26-255672894_x.htm.

The other article is about Gwynn and Ripken now are teaching baseball: Gwynn by being the head coach at San Diego State and Ripken by doing clinics for kids, etc. Here's the article: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AjcNgLvDEnT4OgsHFnzzico5nYcB?slug=sh-gwynnripken072907&prov=yhoo&type=lgns.

Here's an article about Devil Rays infielder Ben Zobrist, a Christian, who was also recently recalled from Triple-A Durham after having been sent down earlier in the season: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070729&content_id=2116850&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Lastly, a blog site by another Orioles Hall-of-Famer Brooks Robinson, a Christian. He unfortunately hasn't updated it since last October though: http://brooks.mlblogs.com/.

MLB misc., Glenn, etc.

First, an article about Diamondback's shortstop Stephen Drew, a Christian, and the positive attitude that he's had this year even though his struggled hitting some: http://www.azcentral.com/sports/diamondbacks/articles/0721dbside0722.html (originally found at: http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070723&content_id=2103790&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp).

Here's an article about Mariners pitcher Miguel Batista helping the Native Americans on reservations in Arizona, which he started in two stints with the Diamondbacks: http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070724&content_id=2105872&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp.

Next, an article about Astros 2nd baseman Craig Biggio announcing last week that he's retiring at the end of the year, after playing his entire 20 year Hall-of-Fame caliber career with the Astros. One of his reasons for retiring was to spend more time with his wife and three kids. Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article_perspectives.jsp?ymd=20070724&content_id=2106471&vkey=perspectives&fext=.jsp.

Here's an article about Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, a Christian, and his mentoring of younger pitchers in the Yankees bullpen: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070724&content_id=2106595&vkey=news_nyy&fext=.jsp&c_id=nyy.

Also, an article about Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester, a Christian, and how important a letter he received from fellow cancer survivor Lance Armstrong was to him while he was going through cancer treatments last fall. I think it shows how much something as seemingly small as an letter of encouragement can mean to someone who is going through a difficult time. Here's the article: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2947987.

Here are some articles about the retirement of Colts left tackle Tarik Glenn, a Christian, last week. The first aritcle is on how difficult the decision to retire was for Glenn to make: http://www.colts.com/sub.cfm?page=article7&news_id=9cf97d9a-8daf-4ef4-8305-9dd4da13140f.

The next article is on how difficult and emotional Glenn's decision was for Colts owner Jim Irsay: http://www.colts.com/sub.cfm?page=article7&news_id=dd6019d1-6b0c-4dfe-9abb-f63d8afaff11.

Here's the letter that Glenn read at his press conference to announce his retirement. The thing to note is how important God and prayer were in his making his decision: http://www.colts.com/sub.cfm?page=article7&news_id=008bd66d-4a01-4123-8172-07a2d0b0ed78.

Another article about Glenn's retirement is a column from the Indianapolis Star sports columnist: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070725/COLUMNISTS01/707250456/1247/SPORTS.

The last article about Glenn is a reflection on him and his retirement from Colts rookie offensive lineman and possible replacement Tony Ugoh, offensive line coah Howard Mudd, and head coach Tony Dungy (a Christian): http://www.colts.com/sub.cfm?page=article7&news_id=d38f95ae-b1b8-4baf-8e76-1bdae219500a.

Next, an article about the trade of Scott Linebrink, a Christian, from the Padres to the Brewers last week. What complicated things for him and his family is that his wife is due any day with their first child. Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070727&content_id=2113006&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Here's an article about Boise State wide receiver Ian Johnson and his girlfriend's wedding. He proposed to her after scoring the winning touchdown in the Fiesta Bowl last January. Because Johnson's black and his new wife is white, he unfortunately got threatening racist letters and phone calls before the wedding. Here's a quote from the article about the wedding:

Before Boise State running back Ian Johnson married the girl he proposed to on national television, the couple prayed to end prejudice.

Johnson and Chrissy Popadics, the cheerleader he proposed to after scoring the winning points in the Fiesta Bowl against Oklahoma, were married Saturday in a traditional ceremony at Cathedral of the Rockies First United Methodist Church.

Here's the article: http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news?slug=ap-boisestate-johnson&prov=ap&type=lgns.

Also, an article about former MLB player and current Mobile BayBear (Diamondbacks Double-A) manager Brett Butler, a Christian, having had a mild stroke on Friday night. He's doiong okay, but could use some prayers. Here's the article: http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070729&content_id=281729&vkey=news_milb&fext=.jsp.

Another note: 3rd baseman Morgan Ensberg, a Christian, was designated for assignment by the Astros today, and they're trying to trade him. This is after they got Ty Wigginton from the Devil Rays on Saturday. Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070729&content_id=2116718&vkey=trade2007&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Lastly, a website for a new biography about the late former college and NBA star Pete Maravich, a Chrsitian: http://maravichbook.com/.

Bowden and baseball misc.

First of all, a couple of articles about Florida State head football coach Bobby Bowden, a Christian, on his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame yesterday. The first one is from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes: http://www.fca.org/vsItemDisplay.lsp?method=display&objectid=981BF8E5-7F00-4C3B-8CE335E779D439DC.

The second Bowden article is a great article from a link off of the above article: http://www.miamiherald.com/603/story/172683.html.

Here's just a happy article about Braves infielder Yunel Escobar, who escaped from Cuba three years ago and then was reunited with his parents and sister in the U.S. this year. His mom just recently was able to leave Cuba and come to the U.S. Here's the article: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/2007/07/18/escobar_0719.html.

Next, a Q & A article with Nationals 2nd baseman Ronnie Belliard. This one is a little different in that most of the questions were asked by kids. Here's a quote:

Question: When you go out onto the field, you write something in the dirt behind second base. What is that?

Belliard: I write "Jesus." That's what I write when I go over there.

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070719&content_id=2097077&vkey=news_was&fext=.jsp&c_id=was.

Also, an article about Julio Franco's happy return to the Braves after 1 1/2 years with the Mets. Here's a quote:

Franco spared no dramatic image in describing his return to the Braves at the age of 48. Cut free earlier this month by the team the Braves are chasing in the National League East — the New York Mets — Franco said he fell to his knees and prayed for deliverance back to the team that once before had rescued his career.

"I asked God, if I don't come to Atlanta, I might as well pack it up," he said before his first game back Thursday against St. Louis.

"I wouldn't go anywhere else, because at my stage and age, if I go anywhere, guys don't know how to use me and they don't know me as well as this organization.

"I'm home."

Here's the article: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/2007/07/19/julio_0720.html.

Lastly, an article that I happened upon about Triple-A Durham Bulls shortstop Ben Zobrist, a Christian, hitting a game-winning home run last night against the Indianapolis Indians. He's trying to make it back to the Devil Rays after playing there last year and earlier this year. Here's the article: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070722/SPORTS/707220395/1193/NLETTER12.

sports misc.

First of all, an AWESOME article by Reds outfielder Josh Hamilton, a Christian, (along with a writer) that was in ESPN the Magazine I guess, but I found it on the ESPN website. It's just an amazing article and a must read. I don't usually get real excited about articles, but this one's great. Here's my favorite quote from the end of the article:

But there is one story that sticks with me, so much so that I think of it every day. I was driving out of the players' parking lot at Great American Ball Park after a game in May, with Katie and our two girls. There's always a group of fans standing at the curb, hoping to get autographs, and I stop to sign as many as I can.

And on this particular night, a little boy of about 9 or 10, wearing a Reds cap, handed me a pen and something to sign. Nothing unusual there, but as I was writing the boy said, "Josh, you're my savior."

This stopped me. I looked at him and said, "Well, thank you. Do you know who my savior is?"

He thought for a minute. I could see the gears turning. Finally, he smiled and blurted out, "Jesus Christ." He said it like he'd just come up with the answer to a test. "That's exactly right," I said.

Here's the article: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2926447.

Next, an article about Royals designated hitter Mike Sweeney , a Christian, undergoing knee surgery last week. Here's an awesome quote from him about it:

Given his nature, Sweeney was smiling and upbeat as he discussed the coming surgery.

"It'll be OK. I don't want to be around here mule-lipping and saying 'Poor me.' I've been very blessed. It is my first surgery in 17 years of playing pro ball. I want to be the same guy hitting .300 as I am hitting .250 getting knee surgery," he said.

"I want to let my teammates know that you can still have joy in the storms of life. And right now it is a storm of life, but I'm still going to have joy and I'm going to do my part to cheer on the guys and be an encouragement to them."

Here's the article:
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070704&content_id=2067257&vkey=news_kc&fext=.jsp&c_id=kc&partnered=rss_kc.

Here's an article about NC State women's head basketball coach Kay Yow (a Christian) and getting back to her normal scedule, including meeting with her friend men's college basketball coaching legend John Wooden (also a Christian) no less:
http://www.cstv.com/sports/w-baskbl/uwire/070507aaa.html.

Also, a funny article about a situation last week during the Devil Rays/Red Sox game where the Devil Rays dugout/bullpen phone stopped working in the middle of the game. I don't think that Devil Rays manager Joe Maddon thought that it was too funny though, although I think I would have been as exasperated as he was if I had been in the same situation:
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070705&content_id=2069533&vkey=news_bos&fext=.jsp&c_id=bos&partnered=rss_bos.

Here's an update on from Cubs outfielder Cliff Floyd on his dad's health:

Floyd plans to spend the All-Star break with his children and his father, who is doing well after undergoing heart surgery. His father's kidney did fail, and he's back on dialysis.

"Right now, he's weak but doing well," Floyd said. "Hopefully, we can lift his spirits up."

Cornelius Floyd got a big boost, spirit-wise, when he was allowed to watch a Cubs game from one of the Wrigley Field suites. Give credit to the hospital staff for making it happen.

"I want to thank everybody for the prayers," Floyd said. "It's amazing what he's been through, and what he's come out of. Without everybody's prayers and help, I don't think he'd do as well as he's doing."

Here's the article:
http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070706&content_id=2071003&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc.

Lastly, an interesting video segment from last night's SportsCenter on Sister Andrea Jaeger, a former teen tennis star who runs a camp for terminally ill children and has just recently become a nun. Here's a link to the search page that I found it on, you have to page down some to find it on the right side of the page, titled "Andrea Jaeger Called to Serve":
http://sports.espn.go.com/keyword/search?searchString=andrea+jaeger&page=espn (if that doesn't work, go to ESPN.com and search for "Andrea Jaeger"). Also, I found the camp's website on another page: http://www.silverliningfoundation.org/.

MLB misc.

First, an article about Devil Rays outfielder Delmon Young's strong throwing arm, but I wanted to point out a quote about his arm from Twins outfielder Torii Hunter, a Christian:

"Delmon Young was born with a cannon, " said Twins outfielder Torii Hunter, known for his strong arm. "It's a God-given ability. It's something special."

Here's the article:
http://www.sptimes.com/2007/05/09/Rays/Cannon_in_the_outfiel.shtml (originally found at: http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070511&content_id=1958344&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp).

Next, a few of the MLB "Mother's Day Postcards". The first is from Cubs outfielder Matt Murton, a Christian. Here's a quote:

When I was 6 years old, I always felt I had to go some place quiet to talk to God, and I would sit under the kitchen table. Thanks, Mom, for sitting there quietly while I had my talks....

Here's the link:
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/mothersday/postcards_07/chc.jsp.

Next, Devil Rays shortstop Ben Zobrist, a Chrisitan:

Thank you so much for your example of your faith in Jesus in your life....

Here's the link:
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/mothersday/postcards_07/tb.jsp.

Also, Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins, also a Christian:

...My mother is beautiful for many more reasons that can't be put into words, but more than all she's beautiful because God blessed me to be her son. I love you mom.

Here's the link:
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/mothersday/postcards_07/phi.jsp.

The last one of the Mother's Day postcards is from Yankees catcher Wil Nieves:

...I'm here in the Major Leagues because of God and because of you.

Here's the link:
http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/mothersday/postcards_07/nyy.jsp.

Here's the MLB Mother's Day main page again: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/mothersday/index_07.jsp.

Lastly, a good article from Mother's Day about Reds outfielder Josh Hamilton's wife Katie, both Christians:
http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070513/SPT04/705130364/1071/rss08.

MLB misc. and Lombardi Trophy

Here's some MLB articles. First, an article about Devil Rays shortstop Ben Zobrist, a Christian. Here's a quote:

The reality check came Aug. 15, his first big-league payday. They had been living paycheck to paycheck, with Ben taking home about $600 every two weeks as Julianna worked to further her Christian rock singing career. They were elated that the promotion to Triple A meant a raise to about $1,000 ("It was like our Christmas," Zobrist said), especially because the day he was to get his first check in Durham they were down to $32 in their checking account and debating whether they could afford to buy gas.

Better, he got a ticket to the majors. And two weeks later, a check for about $14,000.

"We were looking at this check like, 'Is this for real? Is it a play check or something?' " Zobrist said.

With a raise to nearly $400,000 this season (about $19,000 take-home pay every two weeks), Zobrist, who grew up modestly, the son of a minister in Eureka, Ill., is slowly getting used to having money. For the first time, he didn't have to work during the offseason "to make ends meet," though the kids he gave baseball lessons to and supervised birthday parties for at the Showtime Sports Academy for $25 an hour might have missed him.

Here's the article: http://www.sptimes.com/2007/02/25/Rays/Rays__Zobrist_picking.shtml (originally found at: http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070226&content_id=1816917&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp).

Here's a good story about Mariners shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt and his mom and grandma being allowed to join him in the U.S. after emigrating from Cuba:
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/baseball/305099_mari26.html (originally found at: http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070226&content_id=1816917&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp).

Next, a quote from Cubs pitcher Mark Prior about retired Cubs player and current Cubs radio broadcaster Ron Santo's bid for the Hall of Fame on the Veterans' Ballott. Unfortunately, he didn't get in. Here's the quote:

"...I think we'll all be praying for him because he deserves it."

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070226&content_id=1817199&vkey=spt2007news&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc&partnered=rss_chc.

Here's an article about Braves minor league pitcher Jonathon Johnson, a Christian. He's another guy to root for who is trying to make a Major League roster this year. He's had a few "cups of coffee" in the Majors before, but wasn't successful. Here's a quote from after his last bad stint in the Majors with the Astros in 2003, after which he retired from baseball to become a realtor:

The son of a minister and deeply religious, Johnson prayed for a long time that night. "Why aren't things just happening easy for me?" he asked himself. "Why do I keep hitting a wall when I get to the majors?"

Instead of accepting another demotion to the minors, Johnson decided it was time to report to the real world.

"It's tough to go home and be content and be happy — no matter how strong your faith is — when you continue to feel like such a failure in the world's eyes," he said.

Johnson built his real estate business to a point where he now has 15 agents working for him. He expanded his ministry work with twice-a-year trips to Cuba, where he spread the faith through baseball.

Here's the article: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/shared-gen/ap/General_Baseball_News/BBN_Braves_Johnsons_Journey.html.

Also, an article about Cubs closer Ryan Dempster and what he and his wife did to brighten Father's Day for some kids whose dads were away with the military:
http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070227&content_id=1817769&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp.

Lastly, my mom and I were able to go see the Lombardi Trophy last Saturday on part of its tour. It's the trophy given to the Colts after they won the Super Bowl. It was at a local middle school gym. We had to wait for about an hour, half of it outside in the freezing cold with a strong wind blowing. It was entirely worth it to get our pictures taken while touching the trophy.

sports misc.

First, a good note about Michigan State basketball player Drew Neitzel from Sports Spectrum's "The Daily":

Sometimes the most poignant stories in sports are the ones that combine what happens on the playing surface with what happens off. Such is the case with a young man named Adam Visser. Last year, Visser, who was a former high school player-turned-coach, sat in a wheelchair on the sidelines at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Michigan, to cheer on his little brother, Aaron, and the Tri-Unity Christian High School Defenders as they won the Michigan Class D boys state basketball tournament. Adam was suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease, yet he was there and the team and coach Mark Keeler dedicated the win to Visser. Last week, Visser lost his battle with ALS, dying at the age of 35. On Tuesday, at the Breslin Center, another young basketball player Visser had mentored and guided and helped in his Christian walk, Drew Neitzel, shined on a national stage as he played in this important game with Adam Visser’s memory close to his heart. And just as Tri-Unity won a huge game, Neitzel led his team, the Michigan State Spartans to their biggest win of the year as they defeated top-ranked Wisconsin 64-55 behind Neitzel’s pinpoint shooting and 28 points.

Here's the webpage: http://www.sportsspectrum.com/daily/archives/070221.php.

Here's just a fun article about the Braves Jeff Francoeur, a Christian, and the Pirates Adam LaRoche joining the Braves John Smoltz, a Christian, for Smoltz's annual round of golf with Tiger Woods: http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070218&content_id=1806290&vkey=spt2007news&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl.

Next, an article on the Phillies Ryan Howard. Here's a refreshing quote about being a role model. Some athletes today could care less about being a role model and how kids look up at them. It's nice to hear about an athlete who does care:

"As soon as you put on a uniform, you're a role model," he said. "When you're in a Minor League town and have kids coming up to you, [you are one] whether you want to be a role model or not. Once you get up here, it's no different. Kids are looking up to you."

Here's the article: http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070218&content_id=1806437&vkey=news_phi&fext=.jsp&c_id=phi.

Here's a great article about the Reds Josh Hamilton, who is trying to make a comeback to baseball with the Reds after missing a few years because he was messed up with drugs. He sounds like a Christian and great guy to root for. It sounds like from the article that if he doesn't make the Reds, he might still have a good chance back with the Devil Rays. Here's a couple of quotes:

"There were many times I thought I'd never play again, just because of the lifestyle I had been living," Hamilton said. "Nobody can do anything productive out of what I was doing. There were definitely times I felt down and like I'd never get back to doing the thing I loved. God's grace got me here today."...

If he makes it to the Majors, another world of money and temptation could be waiting for Hamilton. He says he has a "backup" plan to confront any issues. Katie carries all of his cash, and the family keeps only one car in Florida to reduce the urge of his taking off alone. The couple is deeply religious and on Monday, Hamilton frequently mentioned his faith as an aid to his staying clean.

If he makes the team this season, the Reds would make arrangements on the road for someone to hold Hamilton's meal money and plan to offer a support system.

"I know there are temptations," Hamilton said. "The devil is going to come at me hard. I don't know from where yet. We'll handle it when it comes.

"It's amazing I'm here with the Reds about four or five miles from where it all began as far as drug use. Sometimes God brings you back to times and places that we were. It might not have been the best of times. But it brings you back there when you're doing well to remind you where he brought you from."

For Hamilton, even that short distance was one heck of a long road.

Here's the article: http://cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070219&content_id=1807988&vkey=news_cin&fext=.jsp&c_id=cin.

Also, a short bit about the Braves Brian McCann:

Before Monday's workout, McCann visited with 14 kids who had been part of Bert's Big Adventure, a non-profit group that annually brings chronically and terminally-ill children to Disney World.

Here's the article: http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070219&content_id=1807579&vkey=spt2007news&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl.

Here's a good article on John Smoltz, a Christian, on his up-coming season and divorce. Here's a quote:

"I'm doing good," he insisted Sunday, speaking in a low voice while sitting at his locker. "I'm focused on the right things. I'm talking about my faith. That's the only thing that's going to get me through any of this stuff. I'm still determined to be and do the same things I've done before. I'm trying to be positive. Attitude is a choice."

Here's the article: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/shared-gen/ap/General_Baseball_News/BBN_Durable_Smoltz.html.

Next, a good article about Broncos kicker Jason Elam studying at Liberty University seminary this off-season. Between him and Colts punter Hunter Smith recording a Christian music album in Nashville, it sounds like the guys that boot footballs in the NFL are keeping busy this off-season! Here's the article:
http://www.bpsports.net/bpsports.asp?ID=5549.

Here's an article about Tony Dungy coming back next year to coach the Colts (YEAH!):
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2771773.

Lastly, the Colts are taking the Lombardi Trophy on a tour around the state and one of the stops is one of our neighboring towns here. It's next Saturday night, and I can't wait to go see it!

MLB.com Christmas Q & A's

Hi. I'm in the middle of reading through the now traditional MLB.com Christmas Q & A articles, one for each of the 30 teams. I've read through a little over 2/3 of them so far and have found some good ones. The first is about Tampa Bay shortstop Ben Zobrist. I think that I'd heard of his name, but that was about it, so I looked up his bio on MLB.com to find out some more. He was traded from the Astros organization last year in the Aubrey Huff trade, and then started in Tampa after that. He also went to college at Dallas Baptist. Here's a quote from the article:

MLB.com: Ben, what are some of the Zobrist family Christmas traditions?

Zobrist: Generally, we go the day after Thanksgiving and cut down our Christmas tree together. I didn't get a chance to do it this year with my family, but we've always done that in the past. Then on Christmas morning, we get up and read "The Christmas Story" first from Luke 2 in the Bible, then my dad prays for us and everything before we start opening presents. ...

MLB.com: Your wife is an accomplished singer. Does she have any plans to sing while in Eureka [hometown in Illinois]?

Zobrist: She will sing at our church once. And I don't know if she's singing anywhere else, but she's singing at church.

Here's the article: http://tampabay.devilrays.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20061219&content_id=1764210&vkey=news_tb&fext=.jsp&c_id=tb.

Next, an article about Cardinals broadcaster Rick Horton. Here's a couple of quotes from the article:

Not only is he active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, he has worked for Baseball Chapel, and is best known these days for his work on Cardinals television and radio broadcasts. ...

MLB.com: What's your favorite carol?

Horton: I think it's "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing." There are two reasons. One is that it's central to the "Charlie Brown Christmas Special." But I also think the words in it really have the spiritual reminder for me of why that day is so important.

Here's the article: http://stlouis.cardinals.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20061221&content_id=1765530&vkey=news_stl&fext=.jsp&c_id=stl.

Also, an article about new Giants manager Bruce Bochy. Here's a quote:

MLB.com: What about the true meaning of Christmas?

Bochy: I think you realize what Christmas really is -- a time when Jesus came down here on Earth, and you are thankful for what you have. It's a time of giving, and we thank the Lord for our family and friends. It has special significance for all our family.

Here's the article: http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20061221&content_id=1765730&vkey=news_sf&fext=.jsp&c_id=sf.

Here's an article about another player that I wasn't that familiar with, Nationals pitcher Micah Bowie. Also, there wasn't much information on his bio, either. But the article about him was great, and it seems like he's a good Christian guy. There's too much to quote here, as I'd have to pretty much quote the whole article. So you will just have to read the article yourself:
http://washington.nationals.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20061220&content_id=1765155&vkey=news_was&fext=.jsp&c_id=was.

Lastly, for now, an article on Orioles 2nd baseman Brian Roberts. Here's a quote:

The popular Orioles second baseman is looking forward to getting his family together once more for the holidays and relaxing a little bit. Roberts is a religious man who spends loads of time with children in the Baltimore community -- time that's often out of the spotlight.

Here's the article: http://baltimore.orioles.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20061218&content_id=1763488&vkey=news_bal&fext=.jsp&c_id=bal.

That's all for now. I'll send along more of the MLB.com Christmas articles later if there are any. I'll also add some back articles in another post later.
