Hi. Here's the second half of my posts this weekend. First of all, an article on White Sox designated hitter Jim Thome raising money for the Children's Hospital of Illinois: http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080113&content_id=2344771&vkey=news_cws&fext=.jsp&c_id=cws (originally found at: http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080116&content_id=2347477&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp).Here's an article about the nominees for the Bart Starr Award given out annually at the Athletes in Action Super Bowl Breakfast. This year's nominees are Bears wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad, Chargers runningback LaDainian Tomlinson, and Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner. The award "honors NFL players who show exemplary character and leadership in the home, on the field, and in the community". Here's the article: http://www.aia.com/news.aspx?newsitem=261.Next, a few articles about Colts head coach Tony Dungy, a Christian, who is considering retiring to spend more time with his family and on his many other ventures. As much as I'd love to see him stay, as both a Christian and a big Colts fan, I can totally understand if he decided to retire. The first article is about the players on the team and how much they want Dungy to return, but they would also understand if he didn't: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080114/SPORTS03/801140373.The second article about Dungy's decision (the Indianapolis Star has ran articles every day this week I think) is about Dungy's decision itself. Here's a quote from Dungy about how he's making his decision: "We'll probably do a lot of praying about what we want to do," Dungy said Monday afternoon. "We'll probably come to some decision this weekend and be ready to move forward on Monday one way or the other.
"It's really just making sure that I'm doing the best job I can do as a dad, and I do think that is my No. 1 job. And if I'm doing that, can I still do enough to be a good coach for the Colts? If I think I can, I'll be back."Here's the article: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080115/SPORTS03/801150404/1247/NLETTER12.The last article on Dungy, for now, is his blog post about the season and his decision from last Tuesday. Here's a quote from him:So many people want to know what I am going to do next year and most of the media believe I have made up my mind already. They don't believe me when I say that my wife and I will sit down this week and talk and pray about what is best for our family. But that is what we're going to do. I really enjoy coaching and wish I could do it forever, but I do know that God has placed a family in my care and I have a responsibility to them first. So we'll reach a family decision this weekend. Here's the post: http://www.mycolts.net/tonydungy/blogentry/49dac150-6d51-426c-a85d-67f8aef57573.Also, an article on Purdue women's basketball player Lauren Mioton publishing a recipe book to help her hometown of New Orleans: http://www.bigtennetwork.com/news/article.asp?LIST_ID=1&STORY_ID=13870.Here's another article about a fund-raiser for New Orleans, this one with Heat center Shaquille O'Neal and Saints runningback Reggie Bush teaming up for a fund-raiser during the NBA All-Star Game weekend in New Orleans: http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_ylt=Ai5Y_85Gi9RMvzrRNA8aeld.T4h4?slug=ap-oneal-bushparty&prov=ap&type=lgns.Next, an article about former Pirates and Braves 1st baseman Sid Bream, a Christian, re-joining the Pirates organization as a coach with their Class-A State College team: http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/story/10578914/rss.Here's an article about University of Buffalo head football coach Turner Gill, a Christian, signing a contract extension to stay with the team: http://cbs.sportsline.com/collegefootball/story/10578894/rss.Also, an article about the girl that got booed last Sunday at the Colts game when she was recognized for winning her age group of the Punt, Pass, and Kick competition. Why was she booed? She was wearing a Patriots jersey, the team that she was representing and the hated rival of the Colts. Patriots owner Robert Kraft got upset and invited the girl, Anna Grant, to be honored before the Patriots home game tomorrow afternoon. It's a nice gesture, but anything Patriots is going to be booed in Indiana regardless. And she realized that it was the jersey, not her. Here's the article: http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs07/news/story?id=3198479.Here's a good article by former MLB outfielder Doug Glanville about fear in sports and life, and how it sometimes drives people to do anything to succeed: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/01/16/opinion/16glanville.html?_r=1&oref=slogin (originally found at: http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080118&content_id=2350277&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp).Next, some articles about Christian MLB players signing new contracts this week. First, a couple of articles about Tigers pitcher Nate Robertson and his new deal: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=As.rEICINK7WfqWWrtfWeNE5nYcB?slug=ap-tigers-robertson&prov=ap&type=lgns and http://www.bpsports.net/bpsports.asp?ID=5746. Other Christian players include the Braves Mark Teixeira (http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080117&content_id=2349888&vkey=news_atl&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl) and Matt Diaz (http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080118&content_id=2350763&vkey=news_atl&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl), and the Rockies Matt Holliday and Willie Taveras (http://colorado.rockies.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080118&content_id=2350393&vkey=news_col&fext=.jsp&c_id=col).Here's an article about Colts coach Jim Caldwell, also a Christian, who is apparently next in line to become the Colts head coach whenever Tony Dungy decides to retire, should it be this year or in the future: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080117/SPORTS03/801170498/1058/SPORTS03.Also, an article about Florida men's basketball head coach Billy Donovan, a Christian, and how much he's enjoying coaching his young team this year. He's had to completely start over without his whole starting line-up from his two-time defending national championship teams. Here's the article: http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/news;_ylt=AgQQqtJ8euO9t4QN6qODXZw5nYcB?slug=jn-donovan011708&prov=yhoo&type=lgns.Lastly, an article about Rockies pitcher Jeremy Affeldt, a Christian, signing as a free agent with the Reds today: http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080119/SPT04/301190047/1071/.
Hi. I'm going to try and send two posts today, I still have so many articles left. First of all, an article about Pirates pitcher Salomon Torres, a Christian, being traded to the Brewers last week. We don't often think about how trades in sports effect the players and their families, but this article mentions how Torres is considering retirement over leaving Pittsburgh and either moving his family to Milwaukee or leaving them in Pittsburgh. Here's a quote from him about that:"It's a giant move and I have to make a decision if I want to go forward," Torres told the newspaper. "This is going to change my life, my family's life.
"If I leave them here, they're going to have to be without me for a full year. If I take them with me, they're going to be affected."
Torres said he needed some time before making a final decision.
"I just need to talk to my family," he said. "I can tell you this: If I go to Milwaukee, I'm going to give my heart and soul to the Brewers." Here's the article: http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=694529 (originally found at: http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071210&content_id=2322310&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp).Here's three articles about the Red Sox Holiday Caravan, which visited several Boston-area children's hospitals in three days. Those that took part in the caravan were pitchers Julian Tavarez, Bryan Corey, Kyle Snyder, outfielder Brandon Moss, bench coach Brad Mills, pitching coach John Farrell, and president/CEO Larry Lucchino. They also brought the World Series Trophy with them too. Here's the article from the first day: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071210&content_id=2322427&vkey=news_bos&fext=.jsp&c_id=bos, the second day: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071211&content_id=2322990&vkey=news_bos&fext=.jsp&c_id=bos, and the third day: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071212&content_id=2323758&vkey=news_bos&fext=.jsp&c_id=bos.Next, an article about Florida State head football coach Bobby Bowden, a Christian, signing a new contract with indefinite one-year options last week. Also, offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher will succeed him as coach, someday when Bowden retires. Here's the article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071210/ap_on_sp_co_ne/fbc_florida_st_bowden_contract.Here's another article about Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, a Christian, about him winning the Heisman Trophy recently and the possibility of him winning one or two more. Here's a quote about how winning the award won't affect him as a person:The people that know him best don't think he'll have any trouble dealing with life as Heisman winner.
If anything, it will help him because it will allow the message he preaches to reach even more people.
"That's how we see it, as God's plan," Tebow's mother Pam said. "He's just had a plan all along, and Timmy's aware of that.
"All of us will sit on him if he does [have trouble dealing with the expectations]. We remind him all the time God gives grace to the humble. He's given you so much grace, don't blow it now."
Tebow is grounded by his faith, his parents and his boyhood idol, 1996 Heisman winner Danny Wuerffel.
Just listen to how he hopes people will remember him as the 2007 Heisman winner.
"You want people to remember you for the way you won it," Tebow said. "I don't think anybody besides [the media] will probably remember how many touchdowns he [Wuerffel] scored, but everybody remembers him putting his hands together and praying and always being humble and always with the utmost integrity."
Outsiders might be skeptical about Tebow's sincerity, especially when he talks about integrity and being thankful. But Howard is emphatic that Tebow, "is that guy.
"They always look for a flaw. I guess people don't want to have a real American hero. Tim Tebow is the real American hero and he's the real deal."
Here's the article: http://www.jacksonville.com/tu-online/stories/121007/col_224212685.shtml (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/209).Also, another article on Tebow winning the Heisman. Here's a quote from him about an interesting perk of winning the award:Interestingly, now that he's a Heisman winner, Tebow has a lifetime vote and can cast a ballot for himself in 2008. Is it a definite vote for the Gator quarterback?
"It depends on what I do. I'm not going to be biased," he said without even a hint of a smile. Here's the article: http://www.floridatoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071210/SPORTS/712100320 (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/209).Here's a good article about Jane Hoeppner, the widow of the late IU head football coach Terry Hoeppner, including video of the news segment that the article is about: http://www.wishtv.com/Global/story.asp?S=7477445&Call=Email&Format=HTML.Next, an article about the great season that Colts linebacker Gary Brackett, a Christian, is having this year, even though it hasn't been noticed in the Pro Bowl voting: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071211/SPORTS03/712110379/1058/SPORTS03.Here's an article about new Mets catcher Brian Schneider's involvement with ALS fund-raising events, after his grandmother died from the disease: http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071211&content_id=2322759&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp.Also, a note from a blog post from Colts head coach Tony Dungy (a Christian) last week about his tight end Ben Utecht, also a Christian, and his part in a Christian Christmas concert:On a note away from football, Ben Utecht is performing with Sandi Patty in her Christmas concert with the African Children's choir and is just great in a duet with Sandi. If you get a chance to see the show, it's tremendous. Here's the post: http://www.mycolts.net/tonydungy/blogentry/de17ba18-1597-4f68-9a6b-ce6b005c5da2.Here's an article about Reds outfielder Josh Hamilton, a Christian, being honored with "Josh Hamilton Day" in his home area in North Carolina last week: http://www.theledger.com/article/20071211/APS/712110868 (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/96).Lastly, an article about Reds pitcher Aaron Harang donating money to the Miracle League in the Cincinnati area to help the baseball league for disabled children: http://news.communitypress.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071212/NEWS05/712120342/1119/RSS1010 (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/96).I'll try to post some more articles later to get caught up. Bye for now!
Hi. Here's some more articles, and I'll try to post as many as I can today. First of all, a couple of articles about Falcons runningback Warrick Dunn reaching 10,000 yards for his career on Thanksgiving against the Colts. This article includes about his charity, Homes for the Holidays, which helps to provide homes for single mothers (click on the link in the article for pictures of one such house). The article also mentions how excited Dunn was for Colts head coach Tony Dungy, a Christian, to be there to see it, since Dungy was Dunn's first coach when they were both with the Buccaneers. Here's the article: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/falcons/stories/2007/11/23/falside_1123.html.The other article is a blog post from Tony Dungy about the game, and he had this to say about getting to be there to see Dunn's 10,000 yard:... So it was great for me to see him reach that milestone personally, and I think the Lord set it up to happen on a night when I was present. Here's the post: http://www.mycolts.net/tonydungy/blogentry/8a8b15b6-c516-440b-955c-5a25e9c1c129.Next, an article about the Mississippi State football team and their head coach Sylvester Croom, a Christian. They have a good chance of making a bowl game this year, with the bowl announcements tonight. Here's a quote about Croom from their athletic director Larry Templeton:The other thing going for the Bulldogs is Croom. Widely regarded as one of the true gentlemen in the game, there's a significant amount of sentiment around the country that would love to see the first black coach in SEC history make it to a bowl game.
"I think all of those come into play. I'd be naive if I didn't think that," Templeton said. "What I have sensed happening is that everybody is pulling for this guy to be successful. Not because he's the black football coach. Because of the integrity and character of the man and the way he's gone about doing it."Here's the article: http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/stories/112307aah.html.Here's a good Christian article about Tigers 1st base coach Andy Van Slyke from The Christian Sports Blog. Here's a good quote from him:As a Christian and a father, he has learned how to keep the game of baseball in perspective. "A lot of times throughout the year we have a tendency to put baseball on the throne," Van Slyke said. "But as Christians, that's the battle. We have to ask ourselves who's going to be on the throne today." Here's the article: http://christiansportsblog.blogspot.com/2007/11/andy-van-slyke-making-impact.html.Also, an article about star track and field sprinter Allyson Felix, a Christian, who was also nominated for the Sportsman of the Year Award from Sports Illustrated: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/magazine/specials/sportsman/2007/11/08/layden.felix/.Here's an article about Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker, who is having a break out year in his first year with the Patriots. Here's a good quote from his dad, Leland:Leland and Shelley know the only sure way to cover their son.
"We cover him in prayer," Leland says. Here's the article: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/nfl/patriots/2007-11-23-sw-wes-welker_N.htm.Next, an article about Lions kicker Jason Hanson, a Christian, and his television acting debut on a local kids TV show in Michigan: http://www.mlive.com/sports/grpress/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/119578650616020.xml&coll=6 (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/11).Here's an article on former Braves outfielder Otis Nixon and his recovery from drug abuse. In turning his life around he became a Christian and is now working on becoming an ordained minister. It's kind of ironic having articles from both Nixon and Van Slyke in this post, since Nixon's best known for his home-run-saving catch of a ball hit by Van Slyke, who was then playing for the Pirates, in the early 1990's. Here's the article: http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/atlanta/stories/2007/11/25/whatever_1126_web.html.Also, an article about Cowboys linebacker Greg Ellis, a Christian, and his getting better with age: http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=310109.Here's an article about Tigers outfielder Curtis Granderson speaking to student athletes at Southern Methodist University: http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071125/SPORTS02/711250650/1050 (originally found at: http://mlbplayers.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071126&content_id=2307411&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp).Lastly, an article about Illinois defensive player J Leman, a Christian, being named a finalists for the Lott Trophy, which honors the college football Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year: http://www.bigtennetwork.com/news/article.asp?LIST_ID=1&STORY_ID=10086.Okay, that's all for now, I'll post more when I can.
Hello. I'm still trying to get caught up on these articles. Here's some more tonight. First of all, an article about what Colts head coach Tony Dungy, a Christian, did the day before the Colts big game against the Patriots on November 4th: He spent the day at his All Pro Dads Kids Experience in Indianapolis helping men to become better dads. He was joined by wide receivers coach Clyde Christensen and punter Hunter Smith, both also Christians. Here's the article: http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news;_ylt=AruJ0gjIdRJ3tCLiYkvLhkJ.T4h4?slug=ap-dungy-familytime&prov=ap&type=lgns.Here's an article about Braves outfielder Jeff Francoeur's (a Christian) wedding to Catie McCoy on November 3rd, and what his now father-in-law thinks of him: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/2007/11/03/francoeur_1104.html.Next, another article on Tony Dungy, this one on how he has chosen his assistant coaches. Some of his former assistants have gone on to be NFL head coaches: Bears head coach Lovie Smith (a Christian), Chiefs head coach Herm Edwards, Lions head coach Rod Marinelli, and Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. Another former assistant is former Alabama head coach Mike Shula. Also Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin considers Dungy a mentor (see the chart on the left side of article and enlarge for more). Here's the article: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/04/sports/football/04dungy.html?_r=2&adxnnl=1&oref=slogin&ref=sports&adxnnlx=1194133312-w6qTFN4Frmy7pPB1IQQ9gg&oref=slogin (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/14).Going back to the Braves, here's an article about new Braves general manager Frank Wren and how he got into baseball and his current job. While he was playing in the Minors, he had a benign tumor removed from his brain, which ended his playing career. Here's a quote from Wren about that:"The big thing for me is that I came from a strong family. My mom and dad taught us values and belief in God, and I always thought things happen for a reason," he says. "Someone much bigger than me was in control. ... Baseball was taken away from me so I could turn the page and go on with my life. I kind of look at that as a blessing now, though I didn't at the time."Here's the article: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/2007/11/03/wren_1104.html.Also, an article about a baseball experience for kids with special needs that the Angels held last week at their stadium. Angels pitcher Justin Speier and broadcaster Rex Hudler helped out, with Hudler's son taking part. Here's a quote from Speier about it: "It's truly an honor and a blessing for me to see the joy these kids possess," Speier said. "Just to be out here on the field is a great time for them." Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071104&content_id=2292039&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.Here's an article about Pirates pitcher Matt Morris wanting to follow former teammate Scott Rolen of the Cardinals lead in building a camp for underprivileged kids: http://mlbplayers.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071105&content_id=2292301&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp.Lastly, for now at least, a couple of articles about what Tony Dungy did on November 5th, the day after the Colts big game against the Patriots. After taking his kids to school that Monday morning, he presented a couple of awards to a couple of men who had started father-child breakfasts at two local high schools. He gave the awards at a conference in Indianapolis sponsored by the White House Conference on Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. Here's the first article: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071105/SPORTS03/711050404/1006/RSS01. Here's the second article, which includes a video: http://www.theindychannel.com/family/14512826/detail.html?rss=ind&psp=news (originally found at: http://apps.facebook.com/sportsuperfan/teams/news/14).
First of all, the last three articles from the NBA's trip to South Africa to conduct a basketball camp and help out the community. The players involved were Spurs forward Bruce Bowen, Bobcats center Primoz Brezec, Hawks guard/forward Josh Childress, Suns forwad/center Sean Marks, Magic forward Pat Garrity, Kings guard Kevin Martin, Rockets center Dikembe Mutombo, Bobcats forward/center Emeka Okafor, Knicks forward Malik Rose, and former NBA players Jim Jackson and Steve Smith. Here's the articles: http://www.nba.com/global/bwb_africa_day_3_recap.html, http://www.nba.com/global/bwb_africa_final_day_recap.html, and an article about Emeka Okafor's reflections on the trip: http://www.nba.com/global/okafor_070909.html.Here's a neat article written in a first-person format by Will Jauss, the 11-year-old son of Dodgers coach Dave Jauss about he and his family's summer with his dad. During the school year he and his family live in Boston, but they spend the summer in Los Angeles with his dad while he's coaching. The article gives some neat insight into what it's like to be a "baseball kid": http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AsJvdQFHAQsKOUa9BT.Uax05nYcB?slug=ys-willjauss091007&prov=yhoo&type=lgns.Next, an article about Shock 6-8 center Katie Feenstra, a Christian, who played collegiately at Liberty University, a Chrisitan college. Her team is currently playing in the WNBA Finals against Phoenix. Before this season she was traded to the Shock after spending two years with San Antonio, which was good for the Michigan native. Here's a couple of quotes from the article: Feenstra could have stayed closer to home to go to college and/or played in any major conference she wanted to. Her faith led her to Liberty, where her older sister also played. Liberty has dominated the Big South and made the NCAA Sweet 16 in Feenstra's senior season. ...
"I think they figured, 'Katie's from Liberty, she's a Christian, she's gonna play soft, she's from the Big South -- what's that?' I had to prove myself. I had to do that in San Antonio, and I had to do that here in Detroit. So it's a battle, constantly, but I think it's started to change." Here's the article: http://sports.espn.go.com/wnba/columns/story?columnist=voepel_mechelle&id=3012543.Here's an article about Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte, a Christian, winning the MLB Clutch Performer of the Month Award for August: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070910&content_id=2199636&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.Also, an article about Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson, a Christian, winning the NL Player of the Week Award for the week ending September 9th. Here's a quote from him:But Wilson seems to have found a comfort zone while hitting in the no. 8 spot for the Pirates. He's averaging .304 in that position, tops in the NL.
"I try to take pride in everything I do," said Wilson. "If I'm going to be hitting eighth, I'm going to try to be the best eighth hitter that I can be. Wherever I hit, I have to do my job." Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070910&content_id=2200103&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.Here's an article about Auburn football head coach Tommy Tuberville supporting a fellow Christian football coach, embattled Mississippi State football head coach Sylveter Croom. Ironically, Mississippi State upset Auburn today, which I guess proved Tuberville right! Here's the article: http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaaf/news;_ylt=AmKxUPXfeklpMyMa1TCYl_l.T4h4?slug=ap-tuberville-croom&prov=ap&type=lgns.Next, an article about John Jackson, an Indianapolis-area guy who is private contractor working for the U.S. Department of Defense in Iraq, and a huge Colts fan. Here's an interesting quote about him and Colts head coach Tony Dungy, a Christian:The father of a 25-year-old daughter, Jackson hopes to one day meet Colts coach Tony Dungy, whose work with All-Pro Dads inspired Jackson to help create an Iraq chapter.
"This is a guy who epitomizes everything I think a man should want to be," Jackson said. Here's the article: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070911/SPORTS03/709110397.Here's an article about Heat guard Dwayne Wade winning the NBA's Community Assist Award for August: http://www.nba.com/heat/community/wade_communityassist_070911.html?rss=true.Also, an article about the six finalists for the MLB Players Association's Man of the Year Award. One finalist was chosen from each division by the fans, and then last week the players then voted on a winner from among the six finalists. The finalists are Cardinals 1st baseman Albert Pujols (a Christian), Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, Twins outfielder Torii Hunter (a Christian), Angels outfielder Vladimir Guerrero, Mets pitcher Tom Glavine, and Padres pitcher Jake Peavy (a Christian). Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070911&content_id=2201399&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.Lastly, I had been wondering if Reds outfielder Josh Hamilton, a Chrisitan, would be eligible for the NL Comeback Player of the Year Award. Unfortunately, a player had to have played in the Majors before coming back, and Hamilton had only played in the Minors. On June 13, they hosted the Lunch for Life and raised $60,000 for crisis pregnancy centers through Kansas City and honored 19-year-old Virginia Hansen. Hansen was pregnant, but was going to have an abortion.
"Part of her family turned on her, part of her friends turned on her and the father of her baby turned on her," Sweeney said. Hansen didn't know how she could put food on the table and support her son. She scheduled a trip to Planned Parenthood for the abortion. However, on the way there, she pulled to the curb and started crying and knew she had to save her child. Hansen came to the Rachel House, a crisis pregnancy center where Shara Sweeney volunteers once a week.
"She went there and they talked to her about the reality of what was inside of her," Sweeney said.
Hansen had the baby and brought him to the Lunch for Life. Hansen believed she was just going to share her story with the audience. Sweeney, however, produced many unexpected gifts.
He presented Hansen with the first Life Award, an award that included gift certificates to salons and massage parlors, a grocery store, baby stroller, baby crib and clothes for the baby. She also received a $5,000 check to purchase a new automobile.
"She knew nothing about it," Sweeney said. "That is probably one of the greatest things that I have done in my life."

In overtime when Redskins kicker Shuan Suisham was kicking the possible game-winning 39-yard field goal, Redskins head coach Joe Gibbs, a Christian, and a few other Redskins players were shown down on one knee praying. The field goal was good. Not that God will always help make outcome good, but this time He definitely did!
First of all, an article about Colts offensive lineman Dylan Gandy (a Christian), looking back at last season and forward to next season: http://www.colts.com/sub.cfm?page=article7&news_id=6496abe1-bc6d-4359-89f6-c6145e9229e4.

This guy is a Christian, half the size of the pitcher, and has kind of long hair) He plays jazz on the flugelhorn (a big trumpet) and trumpet and has been described as a Christian Kenny G. It's a neat, but different sound. Here's his website to hear his music: http://www.davidwellsonline.com/.
First of all, I was watching Rice in the College World Series last night, and I thought that some of the names sounded familiar. I went back and checked the articles that I had sent to you, and found a Christian one on the Rice baseball team from back in April (http://www.sharingthevictory.com/vsItemDisplay.lsp?method=display&objectid=04715208-C6B1-4378-953BAC0F51EED0E9). It was about juniors Joe Savery, Bobby Bramhall, and Brian Friday. On the bottom of the screen during the game it told when and by whom each of them were drafted: Savery in the 1st round by the Phillies, Friday in the 3rd round by the Pirates, and Bramhall in the 18th round by the Brewers. Here's an article about Savery being drafted: http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070607&content_id=2011822&vkey=news_phi&fext=.jsp&c_id=phi. Also, Rice won its 2nd game last night to take the lead in their bracket in the CWS. They get extra time off and wait for the winner of the Louisville/North Carolina game. Rice started and ended the season #1.

Next, a Father's Day article about Pirates shortstop Jack Wilson, a Christian, and his kids. I thought that it was neat that he said that he was going to retire in a few years to become a full-time dad. Here's an article about what IU football incoming freshman Jeff Boyd had to say about coach Terry Hoeppner missing the upcoming season because of illness:
"It's going to be weird because (Hoeppner is) who I came to play for," said Boyd, an all-state defensive lineman from Warren Central High School's Class 5A state champions. "But it's still his staff, and I will do the best I can while I keep praying for him and hoping that he can return in good health."

Lastly, an article about the Reds players and Father's Day. Here's some quotes from pitcher David Weathers and Josh Hamilton on fatherhood:
To closer David Weathers, being a father is old hat. He is the parent of son Ryan, 7, and daughters Karly, 3, and Ally, 9 months. They're worth more than a thousand saves. Said Weathers: "Being a father is the greatest honor of my life - to have three kids and raise 'em and try to teach them a good Christian way to live and make society better instead of worse. It's the best thing that ever happened to me."
For outfielder Josh Hamilton, who has two daughters, 6-year-old Julia and 21-month-old Sierra, being a parent helps him stay focused on himself as well as his family.
"Being a husband and father reminds me of the responsible person I have to be, the way my dad was when I was growing up," Hamilton said. "Watching him be a man, husband and father - supporting us and taking time with us - showed me how to do it. (The kids) do things that catch me off guard. At one moment, they do something or say something that is absolutely hilarious, and in the next moment they do something that drives me crazy. That's all part of it, learning how to do it. The Lord's helping me with it every day. It's fun.
"The family comes out to the ballpark every night."

First, an article about the Major-League debut of Andy LaRoche with the Dodgers last Sunday. He is the younger brother of Pirates 1st baseman Adam LaRoche, and Andy's debut came against Adam's old team, the Braves. The Braves traded Adam to the Pirates last winter. Here's a neat note about Andy's first ML hit, where Braves outfielder Jeff Francoeur (a Christian), one of his brother's former teammates, helped take care of things for him:
When the ball La Roche struck for his first big league hit took a high bounce into the first row of the right-field stands, outfielder Jeff Francoeur, aware of its significance, ran to the fence and asked the fan to throw it back.

Here's another note about Cubs catcher Michael Barrett, a Christian, helping to raise money for his teammate Derrek Lee's foundation to raise money to help fight the eye disease that Lee's daughter has:
Good cause: Michael Barrett raised $12,000 for teammate Derrek Lee's Project 3000 during a silent auction Sunday at Gino's East restaurant. The top items sold were a "W" flag signed by the Cubs players, and four field passes.
"We had a lot of support from a lot of people," Barrett said.
That included a $300 donation from a youngster who set up a blog and promised $1 for every hit he got.
"I was so encouraged, I want to do another [fundraiser]," Barrett said.
Project 3000 is raising money to fight Lebers Congenital Amaurosis, a rare genetic eye disease, which has caused partial blindness in Lee's 4-year-old daughter, Jada.

Next, the annual MLB Mother's Day page, which includes some articles, articles about each team and the pink bats that many players will be using tomorrow, and postcards from a player on each team for their mom or wife. I'll add some specific things to check out too. Of note about the pink bats, at least the Rangers, Rockies, and Mariners bought two pink bats for each of their position players to use, leaving it up to each player to use them or not. Here's the page: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/mothersday/index_07.jsp.
Here's a quote from Stephen Drew, a Christian, in the Diamondbacks' pink bat article about his using a pink bat to honor a friend who died from breast cancer:
Drew, a deeply spiritual man, said that his friend's ordeal served as a reminder of how fragile life can be and what an insidious disease cancer is.
"You never know when life could end," he said. "You think you have all your life to live, but only God knows when you're ready. It's a touchy situation I guess you could say. We're talking about somebody's life. To swing the pink bat, I just look at it as a way to honor those who have gone through it, have fought through it. It's my way of paying tribute and acknowledging it."

Here's a quote from Alex Rios in the Blue Jays article:
Jays right fielder Alex Rios is another member of the Jays who is excited to take the field on Sunday in honor of his mother.
"I thank god for the way my mom raised me," Rios said. "I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for her support. [Sunday] will give me a chance to show that on the field."

Here's the last Mother's Day article for now, a quote from Eric Hinske in the Red Sox article about teammates Jon Lester and Mike Lowell overcoming cancer:
"I think it's helped us come together as a team," Hinske said. "We don't usually talk about it. It's not something you can talk about all the time. [Lester and Lowell] are always in our prayers and we'll be thinking about both of them on Sunday."
Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070508&content_id=1953812&vkey=news_bos&fext=.jsp&c_id=bos.
Lastly, a note about Georgia football head coach Mark Richt and Auburn football head coach Tommy Tuberville, who are both Christians, being friends and playing golf together. I guess the Georgia and Auburn don't like each other much though. Here's the article: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/uga/stories/2007/05/11/0513ugabuzz.html.
First, a good note about Michigan State basketball player Drew Neitzel from Sports Spectrum's "The Daily":Sometimes the most poignant stories in sports are the ones that combine what happens on the playing surface with what happens off. Such is the case with a young man named Adam Visser. Last year, Visser, who was a former high school player-turned-coach, sat in a wheelchair on the sidelines at the Breslin Center in East Lansing, Michigan, to cheer on his little brother, Aaron, and the Tri-Unity Christian High School Defenders as they won the Michigan Class D boys state basketball tournament. Adam was suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease, yet he was there and the team and coach Mark Keeler dedicated the win to Visser. Last week, Visser lost his battle with ALS, dying at the age of 35. On Tuesday, at the Breslin Center, another young basketball player Visser had mentored and guided and helped in his Christian walk, Drew Neitzel, shined on a national stage as he played in this important game with Adam Visser’s memory close to his heart. And just as Tri-Unity won a huge game, Neitzel led his team, the Michigan State Spartans to their biggest win of the year as they defeated top-ranked Wisconsin 64-55 behind Neitzel’s pinpoint shooting and 28 points. Here's the webpage: http://www.sportsspectrum.com/daily/archives/070221.php.Here's just a fun article about the Braves Jeff Francoeur, a Christian, and the Pirates Adam LaRoche joining the Braves John Smoltz, a Christian, for Smoltz's annual round of golf with Tiger Woods: http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070218&content_id=1806290&vkey=spt2007news&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl.
Next, an article on the Phillies Ryan Howard. Here's a refreshing quote about being a role model. Some athletes today could care less about being a role model and how kids look up at them. It's nice to hear about an athlete who does care:
"As soon as you put on a uniform, you're a role model," he said. "When you're in a Minor League town and have kids coming up to you, [you are one] whether you want to be a role model or not. Once you get up here, it's no different. Kids are looking up to you."
Here's the article: http://philadelphia.phillies.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070218&content_id=1806437&vkey=news_phi&fext=.jsp&c_id=phi.
Here's a great article about the Reds Josh Hamilton, who is trying to make a comeback to baseball with the Reds after missing a few years because he was messed up with drugs. He sounds like a Christian and great guy to root for. It sounds like from the article that if he doesn't make the Reds, he might still have a good chance back with the Devil Rays. Here's a couple of quotes:
"There were many times I thought I'd never play again, just because of the lifestyle I had been living," Hamilton said. "Nobody can do anything productive out of what I was doing. There were definitely times I felt down and like I'd never get back to doing the thing I loved. God's grace got me here today."...If he makes it to the Majors, another world of money and temptation could be waiting for Hamilton. He says he has a "backup" plan to confront any issues. Katie carries all of his cash, and the family keeps only one car in Florida to reduce the urge of his taking off alone. The couple is deeply religious and on Monday, Hamilton frequently mentioned his faith as an aid to his staying clean.
If he makes the team this season, the Reds would make arrangements on the road for someone to hold Hamilton's meal money and plan to offer a support system.
"I know there are temptations," Hamilton said. "The devil is going to come at me hard. I don't know from where yet. We'll handle it when it comes.
"It's amazing I'm here with the Reds about four or five miles from where it all began as far as drug use. Sometimes God brings you back to times and places that we were. It might not have been the best of times. But it brings you back there when you're doing well to remind you where he brought you from."
For Hamilton, even that short distance was one heck of a long road.

Also, a short bit about the Braves Brian McCann:
Before Monday's workout, McCann visited with 14 kids who had been part of Bert's Big Adventure, a non-profit group that annually brings chronically and terminally-ill children to Disney World.
Here's the article: http://atlanta.braves.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070219&content_id=1807579&vkey=spt2007news&fext=.jsp&c_id=atl.
Here's a good article on John Smoltz, a Christian, on his up-coming season and divorce. Here's a quote:
"I'm doing good," he insisted Sunday, speaking in a low voice while sitting at his locker. "I'm focused on the right things. I'm talking about my faith. That's the only thing that's going to get me through any of this stuff. I'm still determined to be and do the same things I've done before. I'm trying to be positive. Attitude is a choice."
Here's the article: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/shared-gen/ap/General_Baseball_News/BBN_Durable_Smoltz.html.
Next, a good article about Broncos kicker Jason Elam studying at Liberty University seminary this off-season. Between him and Colts punter Hunter Smith recording a Christian music album in Nashville, it sounds like the guys that boot footballs in the NFL are keeping busy this off-season! Here's the article: http://www.bpsports.net/bpsports.asp?ID=5549.
Here's an article about Tony Dungy coming back next year to coach the Colts (YEAH!): http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2771773.
Lastly, the Colts are taking the Lombardi Trophy on a tour around the state and one of the stops is one of our neighboring towns here. It's next Saturday night, and I can't wait to go see it!
Hi. First, my Colts won! After it was over it was almost more relief and satisfaction than excitement for me.
Here's a quote from the weekly sales e-mail that I got from Hobby Lobby yesterday. I thought that it was really fitting with this year's Super Bowl:
"It is for us to make the effort. The result is always in God's hands."--Mohandas K. Gandhi
Have you seen the "I'm going to Disney World" commercial yet? I saw it this morning during SportsCenter. It has both Tony Dungy and Dominic Rhodes on it: "We're going to Disney World!".
The victory parade is today at 6:00, on one of the coldest days of the year here in Indiana. Right now it's 12 degrees with a windchill below zero.
A somewhat crazy note: most of the schools in central, southcentral, and northcentral Indiana had a two-hour delay today, which were announced yesterday. The official reason was because of the cold weather, which it was one degree when they went to school at 10:00. The unofficial reason was so all of the kids could stay up later and watch the Colts in the Super Bowl last night. There are some schools that are already calling a two-hour delay for tomorrow, so today's delay was probably fairly legitimate.
Also, an article about the Red Sox Curt Schilling and his wife and they're work for preventing skin cancer: http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070131&content_id=1790894&vkey=news_bos&fext=.jsp&c_id=bos.

Next, an article about Colts coach Tony Dungy speaking at the College Mentors for Kids annual gala in a couple weeks: http://www.colts.com/sub.cfm?page=article7&news_id=4618.
Here's an article about the Colts Anthony McFarland and his second chance at playing in the Super Bowl. He was on the Buccaneers team that won the Super Bowl in 2002, but was injured and unable to play. Here's a quote:
The teams on which McFarland played in Tampa were some of the must successful defensive units in the NFL, and in 2002, the Buccaneers beat the Oakland Raiders in the Super Bowl. McFarland missed that game, and he has spoken extensively this week of a second opportunity to play in the NFL’s biggest game.
“It’s just been a blessing,” McFarland said. “Sometimes you go through things in life, and when you have the ability to overcome and the ability to strive through the adversity, it’s good.
“I feel very, very blessed.”

Here's another great article on Bears coach Lovie Smith, a Christian: http://www.bpsports.net/bpsports.asp?ID=5533.
Next, a great article about the importance of Christianity on the Colts team, including players Matt Giardano, Hunter Smith, Jeff Saturday, Dexter Reid, and Justin Snow: http://www.bpsports.net/bpsports.asp?ID=5536.
Here's an article about Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith posing for a picture for a newspaper advertisement for Campus Crusade for Christ: http://www.bpsports.net/bpsports.asp?ID=5539.
I did some searching about that advertisement, and I came across the website that it was promoting. It has a lot of good links and testimonies from Dungy, Smith, and some Colts and Bears players: http://www.beyondtheultimate.org/.

Also, a couple of articles about Giants catcher Mike Matheny's retirement. Here's some quotes from him about it in the first one:

In the second article, here's a quote from Matheny's long-time teammate Matt Morris about him:
"As my catcher and as a person he just meant so much to me," said Giants pitcher Matt Morris, who also threw to Matheny in St. Louis. "On the field he taught me how to be a professional. Off the field he taught me to be a man and a respectful person. He's going to be sorely missed by everybody.
"Unfortunately through his head trauma and concussions, it's just ending a little abruptly to him. He was a guy so hard-nosed and he wanted to play every day, so for it to end this way is unfortunate. After the blows to the head, he wasn't the same. We want the old Mike Matheny back, baseball player or not," he said.

Hi. Sorry that this is so long. I got kind of behind on reading articles and have spent the past few days playing catch up. I have several articles to include here from the past week. First of all, after the Colts Tarik Glenn's foundation, D.R.E.A.M. Alive, Inc., was mentioned in "The Daily"(http://www.sportsspectrum.com/daily/archives/070122.php), I did an internet search for it and found the website: http://www.dreamaliveinc.org/. Glenn is a Christian.
Also, yesterday I noticed that the Orioles Brian Roberts' website had been added to the list of players websites on the MLB Players Association website. His site is: http://www.brianroberts1.com/. He is also a Chritian.
I added both website links to the people in sports links.Next, a Q & A article with the Rangers Mark Teixeira, a Christian: http://www.ajc.com/gatech/content/sports/gatech/stories/2007/01/19/0120teixeira.html.
Here's an article about the Colts Peyton Manning. Here's a quote about his pre-game ritual before the Patriots game last Sunday at 6:30:
Back to the locker room about 5:10. On the field for team pre-game at 5:40. At his locker at 6:15 for a few gulps of Gatorade, a quiet moment and a quick prayer.

Next, an article about Patriot and Indianapolis native Rosevelt Colvin and his mom. Here's some quotes:
She [his mom] remembers the days when the teenager [Colvin] worked at the [RCA] Dome's concession stand operated by members of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. His job was to make and sell cotton candy during Colts games, but he frequently slipped away to see the action....
She [his mom] still leads the choir at Ebenezer, where her children were always in tow....
"It's home, so everything about the area reminds me of joyous things," Colvin said this week. "I had a great upbringing, and my parents were great role models. All the people were at my church, my high school . . . I'm a Midwestern cat."

“Time just stopped for me. I kind of looked up to the sky and thanked God.”
Here's the article: http://www.colts.com/sub.cfm?page=article7&news_id=4578.
Next, an article about the AFC Championship trophy presentation after the Colts game last Sunday. Here's the quotes Colts owner Jim Irsay and head coach Tony Dungy, that I mentioned earlier this week: Irsay: “There’s a lot of glory up here with this trophy. As the humble leader of this organization, we’re giving all the glory to God.”
Dungy: “We just have to thank the Lord. He did it in such a way that no one would believe it.”

Here's an article about the Colts final touchdown drive to win the game. Here's a quote from Peyton Manning about it:
On the Colts’ final drive, Manning completed three of four passes for 57 yards, and on 3rd-and-2 from the Patriots 3, Manning handed to rookie running back Joseph Addai, who ran through the back of the end zone for the Colts’ first lead of the game.
“I don’t know if you’re supposed to pray for stuff like that, but I said a little prayer there,” Manning said....

Also, an article about Tony Dungy and Bears head coach Lovie Smith. Here's a quote about them from ESPN's John Clayton:
On the Friday evening before the start of the AFC playoffs, Bears coach Lovie Smith had dinner in Indianapolis with his close friends, Tony Dungy and [Chiefs head coach] Herman Edwards, before the two squared off for their first-round playoff game between the Colts and Chiefs.
His Bears in a bye week, Smith sensed history. The three African-American coaches, devoted Christians and family men, were striving for the Super Bowl. Smith and Edwards learned NFL coaching from Dungy, their mentor when they worked for him with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. It was a special moment.

All I have to say about the Colts is that I'm proud to be an Indiana native and a Colts fan because of what a good Christian people they have. Here's an article about the Bears victory on Sunday, and here's a quote from Lovie Smith after the game:
"Our players knew about it and they wanted to help us make history today," Smith said. "I feel blessed to be in this position, but I'll feel even better to be the first black coach to hold up the world championship trophy."

Here's a Q & A article with the Diamondbacks Conor Jackson. I wanted to point out what he had to say about his teammate Tony Clark, a Christian:
MLBPLAYERS.com: A good veteran first baseman in Tony Clark is also on the Arizona roster with you. How have the two of you worked together for the good of this club?
Jackson: He is such an unbelievable guy. He has made the adjustment for me so much easier. He was coming off a huge year himself in 2005 and that just shows the character that he has. He really helped me out tremendously.
