MLB, football, and basketball

Hello! I'm going to divide the articles that I have into two posts. I'll do one now, and the other either later today or tomorrow.

The first article that I have is about some past and present MLB players getting together to help raise money for the MLB Players Trust last weekend. Those involved were Ken Griffey, Jr.(Reds), Ryan Howard (Phillies), Mark Grudzielanek (Royals), Chris Capuano (Brewers), Kenny Lofton (Indians), Brian Fuentes (Rockies), Mark Loretta (Astros), Josh Barfield (Indians), and Hall of Famers Frank Robinson, Dave Winfield, Ozzie Smith, Paul Molitor, and Eddie Murray. Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/pa/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080106&content_id=2340299&vkey=mlbpa_news&fext=.jsp.

Here's an article about Pedro Taylor, the father or murdered Redskins safety Sean Taylor, visiting the Redskins after they lost in the playoffs last weekend: http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn/viewtopic.php?t=333996.

Next, an article about Packers defensive end Aaron Kampman, a Christian, receiving the Red Smith Award, which "is presented annually to the individual who has contributed or continues to contribute to sports either on or off the field throughout the state of Wisconsin." Here's a quote from him about his work in the community:

Kampman's role in the community is nearly as extensive as his being named to back-to-back Pro Bowls as a player.

Last January, he and his wife, Linde, spent two weeks with the Gospel of Asia Christian ministry. He also previously traveled overseas with the Christian organization Unlimited Potential Incorporated. He has worked with the Packers' All-Pro Dad event in 2006 and volunteers extensively with the Green Bay Community Church youth group.

"I've done a lot of different things, speaking to different groups and just seeing what God is doing in different areas," Kampman said. "I enjoy speaking to kids. I have a degree in elementary education and just the opportunity to be an influence in people's lives, because regardless of what people think — right, wrong or indifferent — that's the responsibility you have."

Here's the article: http://www.postcrescent.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080106/APC02/801060602/1892.

Here's an article about Rays Triple-A Durham Bulls manager Charlie Montoyo, whose 11-week-old son is fighting for his life after he was born with a rare heart ailment. The Rays and their minor-league affiliates, most of whom Montoyo managed at one time, have started funds to help the Montoyos pay for medical bills and other expenses. Here's a quote from Montoyo:

Montoyo said he has tried at times to think about baseball, a game that has been his life for decades.

"I thank God that the job I have allows me to be here everyday with my family," he said. "I don't want to miss a game, a day of baseball, so we planned to have the baby in the offseason. It worked out, it was perfect. And now I need to be here."

Here's the article: http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080107&content_id=336926&vkey=news_milb&fext=.jsp.

Also, an article about Dodgers infielder Nomar Garciaparra and his wife Mia Hamm (former star soccer player), who are involved with a celebrity soccer game that helps raise money for Children's Hospital of Los Angeles and the Mia Hamm Foundation, which raises funds and awareness for bone marrow transplant patients and their families: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080107&content_id=2341211&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Here's an article about Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, a Christian, interviewing for the Dolphins head coaching job last week: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/football/2008-01-07-3264981647_x.htm.

Next, a Christian article about Kentucky tight end Jacob Tamme "was named winner of the Bobby Bowden Award, a national honor for character, service, academics, and football performance, as presented by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at the FCA breakfast held in conjunction with the national championship game." Also at the breakfast were Ohio State head football coach Jim Tressel, Florida State head football coach Bobby Bowden, and LSU head football coach Les Miles. Here's the article: http://www.fca.org/vsItemDisplay.lsp?method=display&objectid=256814F1-B388-4054-92C749EC1938B82B.

Staying with the national championship game, an article about LSU beating Ohio State in that game. Here's a quote from LSU head coach Les Miles about playing in and winning the game:

"Certainly there will be some argument as to who's the best team. But I think the national champion has been crowned tonight," Miles said. "I have give great credit to some divine intervention that allows us to be in this position."

Here's the article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080108/ap_on_sp_co_ga_su/fbc_bcs_championship

Also, a Christian article about former Florida State Heisman-Trophy winning quarterback and NBA guard Charlie Ward. Ward is now an assistant football and basketball coach at a Christian school in Houston. Here's a great quote from the article:

“When I look back over my life to where I am today, the Lord definitely had his hand on me because everything has happened for a reason,” Ward said. “It’s just a blessing that I had those different experiences over my career. It shaped my thought process and made me the type of husband and father I am today.”

Here's the article: http://www.bpsports.net/bpsports.asp?ID=5736.

Here's a Christian article about Boise State safety Marty Tadman, who just finished his college career. Here's a quote from him:

“Football has given me a national platform,” Tadman said. “It has opened many doors that otherwise would not be opened. I have been able to reach people that would not have listened to a word I say. It’s been awesome.

“The biggest witnessing tool you have is your life,” he continued. “I am living for heavenly things. I want to share my life being a loving testament to Christ. God wants me to stand up for myself and faith in a bold way. He wants to use me in a powerful way.”

Here's the article: http://www.bpsports.net/bpsports.asp?ID=5737.

Lastly on this post, an article about Reds high school scout Ken Neuhaus, who recently became a scout after coaching high school and college baseball for many years. Here's a quote from him about that:

"I always thought I was blessed because I got paid to coach for 26 years. Now, I'm getting a chance to get paid just for watching games."

football, MLB, & NBA

First, an article on Colts back-up safety Matt Giordano, a Christian, on the upcoming season Here's a quote from Giordano:

“It’s something I really am trying to do, to be great strong safety and a great free safety in this defense. Hopefully, Lord willing, no one will go down, but if something like that happens, I can step in and play both spots. Coaches don’t have to worry.

“They can know and trust I know what I’m doing and I’ll get the job done.”

Here's the article: http://www.colts.com/sub.cfm?page=article7&news_id=24c64c76-9e97-43ab-b7c7-9d75fbb59021.

Here's a Christian article on former Maryland quarterback Sam Hollenbach, who is trying to catch on with a NFL team. Right now he's waiting on God has for him in football or not. Here's the article: http://www.bpsports.net/bpsports.asp?ID=5647.

Next, an article about Devil Rays shortstop Ben Zobrist, a Christian. He was trying to once again prove himself as the Rays starting shortstop, after he lost the job earlier this season and was sent down to Triple-A Durham. Unfortunately last night, after this article was written Zobrist strained his right oblique and was put on the disabled list, possibly for the rest of the season. Here's a quote from him from the article about his trying to earn the shortstop job:

Zobrist is a devout Christian, which has prompted some to question his competitiveness. He smiled when asked if his faith has made him any less of a competitor.

"In my life, I've been the most competitive person to myself -- against myself," Zobrist said. "And that's been my worst enemy at times. So I can't really look around at other people and make my comparison based on what other people are doing. I've got to know inside that I'm giving it everything I can, and that I can be satisfied at the end of the day because of that. People can say what they want, and they can have their opinions and they're certainly entitled to that, but that should not affect what I do."

Zobrist said he's learning that he can't control everything.

"It's a simple truth, but sometimes, it takes us longer to figure out than others," Zobrist said. "But I'm learning that God is a lot more in control than I thought."

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070815&content_id=2149962&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Here's an article about 76ers guard Kevin Ollie, a Christian, who recently hosted a golf tournament to raise money for athletes with disabilities. Other NBA players in the tournament were Celtics guard Ray Allen, Boston Celtics TV analyst Donny Marshall, former NBA player Aaron McKie, and Sonics guard Mike Wilks. Here's the article: http://www.nba.com/sixers/features/kevin_ollie_golf_070814.html?rss=true.

Also, an "interesting" Q & A article with Kings forward Ron Artest and his trip to Kenya to help others. Here's a quote from him about it:

You've been back for two weeks, have you had a chance to reflect on your trip to Kenya?"

It made me think of how good we have it over here, but at the same time it made me appreciate life. I got a chance to see the soul of the African American and I also got a chance to see tribes that still live like they did 400 years ago. I feel like whatever God gives you [you should be grateful for] or how ever you may be living now—some people think they are struggling in America—but they are not really struggling until they see what it's like over there. At the same time, the tribes live in what we would say is poverty, but they don’t consider it poverty. ... It made me appreciate life."

Here's the article: http://www.nba.com/kings/features/Ron_Summer_2007.html?rss=true.

Lastly, an article about the New Mexico State football wearing pink socks and their coaches will wear pink shirts during their game September 29th to help raise money breast cancer. The head coach Hal Mumme's wife June overcame the disease a few years ago. Here's the article: http://www.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/stories/081507abq.html.

a lot of sports misc.

First, three columns on the death of Wake Forest men's basketball head coach Skip Prosser last week: http://sports.yahoo.com/ncaab/news?slug=dw-prosser072607&prov=yhoo&type=lgns.

The next one about Prosser is by Dick Vitale: http://espn.go.com/dickvitale/070726skipprosser.html.

The last one about Prosser is a good one by Andy Katz of ESPN about the reaction to his death by several other NCAA men's basketball coaches and how it made them think about the frenetic pace of their own lives while on the recruiting trail in July like Prosser was: http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/columns/story?columnist=katz_andy&id=2950594.

Here's a note about Georgia football head coach Mark Richt, a Christian, and his trying to reach out to his former player Odell Thurman of the Bengals. Thurman has been suspended for the season by the NFL for recurring drug and alcohol problems. Here's the note:

Richt trying to reach out to Thurman
Former Georgia player Odell Thurman is out of the NFL for the next year and Mark Richt is out of ways to reach him.

The coach has tried to get in touch with his former star linebacker just to check in on him and talk to him about the problems swirling around his life. But Richt has not had any luck yet.

"I really like Odell," Richt said Friday. "I just pray that he gets everything straight and takes advantage of the blessings that God has given him with his ability and his talent."

Thurman was suspended for all of last season after skipping a drug test and later being arrested for drunken driving. He asked NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to reinstate him for the 2007 season, but was turned down Thursday.

"I tell our players once you make a mistake you lose control of the consequences," Richt said at SEC media days. "You don't have any rights anymore. You have to abide by the authority over you and that is what he is doing right now."

Here's the webpage it's on: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/uga/stories/2007/07/27/thurman_0727_.html.

Next, a blog post from Colts head coach Tony Dungy, a Christian, partly on the retirement of left tackle Tarik Glenn last week. Here's a quote about it that I thought was good:

Back at work, it was good to get back into the routine. The only downside was Tarik Glenn's retirement. He had talked to me at the ESPY's about the possibility of retiring. I told him I wanted him to be sure in his mind it was the right thing for him and his family. I didn't want him to come back because he felt the team needed him, because we'll find another person to play left tackle. I only wanted him to come back if he really wanted in his heart to play. In the end, it was the right time for Tarik. He's at peace with his decision and that's what counts. He had a great 10 years and capped it off with a Super Bowl. So we'll miss him but we're all very happy for him.

Here's the blog post: http://www.mycolts.net/blogentry/09055d15-8079-4a7c-9c10-c5d6ec0f25df.

Here's an article about Dale Earnhardt, Inc. (DEI) president Max Siegel. I don't know if he's a Christian or not, but he is/was good friends with Tony Dungy and NFL Hall-of-Famer the late Reggie White, who are/were to great Christians. I know that doesn't necessarily mean anything, but I thought that I would include it for what it's worth: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070727/SPORTS0109/707270335/1052/SPORTS01.

Also, an article about Cubs outfielder Matt Murton, a Christian, being called back up from Triple-A Iowa after having been sent down earlier this year: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070727&content_id=2112980&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Here's an article about Braves rightfielder Jeff Francoeur, a Christian, and how he's hitting better overall this year, even though he's hitting fewer homers. He did, however, hit a homer tonight though (Go Braves!). Here's the article: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/2007/07/27/francoeur_0728.html.

Next, an article about the Bluffton University baseball team, the team from the Christian college that was involved in a deadly bus accident last March, and how they were given the royal treatment as guests of the Indians at their game last weekend: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AggDqIS8kOL0wFdNpxbns4d.T4h4?slug=ap-indians-bluffton&prov=ap&type=lgns.

Next, a couple of articles about former Padre Tony Gwynn and former Oriole Cal Ripken, Jr., before their induction into the Baseball Hall of Fame last Sunday. The first article is about Tony Gwynn that I again found in my local Sunday paper and then found online. Here's a quote from him about his career:

"I had no idea that all the things in my career were going to happen," he said. "I sure didn't see it. I just know the good Lord blessed me with ability, blessed me with good eyesight and a good pair of hands, and then I worked at the rest."

Here's the article: http://www.usatoday.com/sports/baseball/2007-07-26-255672894_x.htm.

The other article is about Gwynn and Ripken now are teaching baseball: Gwynn by being the head coach at San Diego State and Ripken by doing clinics for kids, etc. Here's the article: http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news;_ylt=AjcNgLvDEnT4OgsHFnzzico5nYcB?slug=sh-gwynnripken072907&prov=yhoo&type=lgns.

Here's an article about Devil Rays infielder Ben Zobrist, a Christian, who was also recently recalled from Triple-A Durham after having been sent down earlier in the season: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070729&content_id=2116850&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Also, an article about Morgan Ensberg, a Christian, being traded by the Astros to the Padres today: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070731&content_id=2119971&vkey=trade2007&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb.

Lastly, a blog site by another Orioles Hall-of-Famer Brooks Robinson, a Christian. He unfortunately hasn't updated it since last October though: http://brooks.mlblogs.com/.

Bowden and baseball misc.

First of all, a couple of articles about Florida State head football coach Bobby Bowden, a Christian, on his induction into the College Football Hall of Fame yesterday. The first one is from the Fellowship of Christian Athletes: http://www.fca.org/vsItemDisplay.lsp?method=display&objectid=981BF8E5-7F00-4C3B-8CE335E779D439DC.

The second Bowden article is a great article from a link off of the above article: http://www.miamiherald.com/603/story/172683.html.

Here's just a happy article about Braves infielder Yunel Escobar, who escaped from Cuba three years ago and then was reunited with his parents and sister in the U.S. this year. His mom just recently was able to leave Cuba and come to the U.S. Here's the article: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/2007/07/18/escobar_0719.html.

Next, a Q & A article with Nationals 2nd baseman Ronnie Belliard. This one is a little different in that most of the questions were asked by kids. Here's a quote:

Question: When you go out onto the field, you write something in the dirt behind second base. What is that?

Belliard: I write "Jesus." That's what I write when I go over there.

Here's the article: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070719&content_id=2097077&vkey=news_was&fext=.jsp&c_id=was.

Also, an article about Julio Franco's happy return to the Braves after 1 1/2 years with the Mets. Here's a quote:

Franco spared no dramatic image in describing his return to the Braves at the age of 48. Cut free earlier this month by the team the Braves are chasing in the National League East — the New York Mets — Franco said he fell to his knees and prayed for deliverance back to the team that once before had rescued his career.

"I asked God, if I don't come to Atlanta, I might as well pack it up," he said before his first game back Thursday against St. Louis.

"I wouldn't go anywhere else, because at my stage and age, if I go anywhere, guys don't know how to use me and they don't know me as well as this organization.

"I'm home."

Here's the article: http://www.ajc.com/sports/content/sports/braves/stories/2007/07/19/julio_0720.html.

Lastly, an article that I happened upon about Triple-A Durham Bulls shortstop Ben Zobrist, a Christian, hitting a game-winning home run last night against the Indianapolis Indians. He's trying to make it back to the Devil Rays after playing there last year and earlier this year. Here's the article: http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070722/SPORTS/707220395/1193/NLETTER12.
